Penei Sewell has finally climbed to the top of the offensive tackle mountain.
ESPN’s 2026 position rankings, built from polling executives, coaches and scouts around the league, put the Detroit Lions standout at No. 1 among offensive tackles. For a player who has been hovering near the top of these conversations for a while, it’s the kind of recognition that feels overdue.
The voting wasn’t a runaway, but Sewell’s consistency carried the day. As ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler put it, “Sewell took the top spot with consistency in the voting.
Though he didn't dominate the first-place voting, he was living in the second- and third-place range, which improved his average in the composite total. And one NFC executive was blunt when describing Sewell's strengths as a player.”
That executive didn’t hold back on what makes Sewell such a force. “He has the most 'f--- you' attitude plays in the league,” the exec said. “Always brings the juice.”
Even in a year Sewell himself viewed as a step back, the respect around the league never really faded. Fowler noted that “his 89.6% pass block win rate landed outside the top 40 offensive tackles last season”, adding that “It was his lowest since his rookie year in 2021.”
That metric has its flaws, and ESPN’s own analysis has already taken a shot at Sewell using it just days before the rankings were released. Still, the broader league view landed in Sewell’s favor.
The move to left tackle is part of the story, too. Sewell played there at Oregon and won the Outland Trophy as a sophomore, and he has filled in at the spot for the Lions before when Taylor Decker missed time. It’s not unfamiliar territory for him, but it’s still a notable shift as he heads into the season.
And somehow, Sewell is still only entering his age-26 season. With that kind of age, talent and track record, ESPN’s No. 1 ranking may be the start of a long stay at the top.
