Amon-Ra St. Brown’s Week 2 night against the Buffalo Bills ended up costing him more than just the usual bumps and bruises.
The Detroit Lions receiver said Thursday that the league fined him four separate times for actions he took during the game, with each penalty coming in at more than $14,000. St. Brown described the situation plainly when asked whether he had heard from the NFL about the punishment.
“Yeah, I have,” St. Brown said when asked if he heard from the league about a fine for his celebration, according to Nolan Bianchi of The Detroit News.
“It’s not good, man,” a somber St. Brown added. “14 something times four.”
That adds up to more than $56,000 tied to one game.
According to Bianchi, the fines stemmed from a celebration in which St. Brown mimicked smoking a joint several times during the contest.
It’s a hefty hit for almost anyone, though St. Brown is playing on a four-year, $120.1 million contract.
He was hardly the only player facing league discipline for celebrations last week.
San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk was fined $14,926 for simulating a beer chug, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported. The NFL explained the move this way: “Your imitation of chugging a beer constituted an offensive demonstration and could reasonably be construed as being in poor taste,”
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase also said he was fined for a celebration that nodded to WWE legend The Rock’s “People’s Elbow” finisher.
“This is where the superstars have to get in with NFLPA and fight for our money. I’m getting fined for an elbow,” Chase said. “It’s a wresting move.”
Indianapolis Colts guard Matt Goncalves was also fined for an “offensive demonstration” after simulating a beer chug.
It was a costly week for players who crossed the league’s celebration line.
