Michigan Football Legend Jerry Hanlon Passes Away, Leaving a Lasting Legacy

Jerry Hanlon, a legendary figure in Michigan football history, has passed away at the age of 96. Known for his profound impact on the game, Hanlon's legacy is deeply intertwined with the Wolverines' storied past.

Hanlon's journey with Michigan began in 1969 when he arrived alongside the iconic Bo Schembechler from Miami (Ohio). Over the course of 23 years, Hanlon became a cornerstone of Michigan's coaching staff, holding various roles but truly making his mark as the offensive line coach.

His expertise helped shape 18 All-American linemen and even guided quarterback Jim Harbaugh to All-American status. Under his mentorship, 36 of his players were drafted into the NFL, a testament to his ability to develop top-tier talent.

After hanging up his coaching whistle in 1991, Hanlon transitioned to a role as the assistant director of development and external relations for Michigan's athletic department, continuing to contribute to the program he loved.

Hanlon's roots trace back to North Bend, Ohio. He kicked off his coaching career at his alma mater, Taylor High School, before moving on to Canton Catholic High School.

There, he served as an assistant football coach for four seasons and even took on the role of head basketball coach for a year. His coaching path then led him to Youngstown Ursuline and Cleveland St.

Edward, before joining Jon McVay's staff at the University of Dayton in 1965.

A graduate of Miami University in 1956, Hanlon was a halfback on teams that clinched two Mid-American Conference titles under the legendary Ara Parseghian. Before his tenure at Michigan, he spent three seasons coaching at Miami with Schembechler from 1966 to 1968.
