Malcolm Rodriguez Just Added New Tension To Detroits Linebacker Battle

As the Lions continue their training camp, linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez's early exit raises questions about his competition for a starting role amidst injury and new team additions.

The Detroit Lions had another padded training camp practice Tuesday, but the workout came with a familiar camp wrinkle: a linebacker heading to the sideline early.

Malcolm Rodriguez left practice to be evaluated for an ankle injury, according to reports. The team has not officially said how serious the issue is.

Rodriguez is trying to win the third linebacker job in Kelvin Sheppard’s base 4-3 defense, so any missed time matters. That spot has become one of the more interesting battles on the roster, with Rodriguez in the mix alongside Jack Campbell and Derrick Barnes.

For Rodriguez, the road back to this point has been anything but smooth. The Lions took him in the sixth round in 2022, and he quickly carved out a starting role as a rookie when Sheppard coached the position.

But his place in the defense shifted the next year after Detroit used a first-round pick on Jack Campbell and saw Derrick Barnes grow into a reliable option. That pushed Rodriguez behind Campbell, Barnes and veteran Alex Anzalone.

He was back in a bigger role in 2024 after injuries hit Barnes and Anzalone, both of whom landed on injured reserve. Then Rodriguez’s own season ended on Thanksgiving with a torn ACL. The injury carried into the start of the 2025 season, and he did not make his first appearance until Week 12 against the New York Giants.

In his career, Rodriguez has 163 combined tackles, three sacks and 11 tackles for loss. He also had an interception in the Lions’ NFC Championship loss to the San Francisco 49ers in 2023.

Detroit brought him back this offseason on a one-year deal after his rookie contract expired, and he is again fighting for a key role. Campbell was an All-Pro in 2025, while Barnes remains in the mix, and veteran Devin White now enters the competition as well.

White joined the Lions after rookie Jimmy Rolder suffered a hamstring injury that will cost him time. Rolder’s injury was one of several health issues Detroit has already had to manage in camp, along with problems involving Derrick Moore, Anthony Firkser and Sione Vaki.

White brings a strong resume to the fight for snaps. Last season, he posted a new career high in tackles with the Las Vegas Raiders, and earlier in his career he was named a Second Team All-Pro with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Isaac TeSlaa Faces An Early Camp Test In Crucial Year 2

Isaac TeSlaa is spending training camp trying to turn a strong rookie season into a bigger role for the Lions, and the focus right now is less on highlight plays than on the finer points of his craft. Detroit wants him to expand his route tree and sharpen his technique, the kind of work that can separate a promising young receiver from one who is ready for a larger share of the offense.

Dan Campbell said TeSlaa has run into some of the usual growing pains that come with those adjustments, but the coach made it clear the team sees this as part of the development curve rather than a setback. Campbell likened it to refining a golf swing, the sort of thing that only gets better through repetition, and TeSlaas next step will be showing that the work in practice can carry over once the games start to matter again. Lions Camp Still Leaves Big Questions About Who's Really Ready

Detroits seventh camp practice came with the kind of heat that can turn a routine August session into a test of endurance, and several players were left managing their workloads because of it. The Lions had a mix of limited participation and absences as the temperature and a handful of injuries shaped the day, with the staff clearly taking a cautious approach rather than forcing anyone through a long workout.

Jahmyr Gibbs was back on the field, but his return still stopped short of full participation, and Tyler Conklin also rejoined the mix after coming off the PUP list. Even so, both were handled carefully as the team eased through walkthrough work and individual periods, leaving their next step in camp as the more interesting question than simply whether they were present at all. Lions Camp Just Raised The Stakes For One Crowded Position

An open practice for fans gave the Lions another look at a linebacker room that has become more interesting by the day. Detroit has been leaning into competition and depth on defense, and the recent addition of Devin White only sharpened that dynamic as the team works to keep the unit adaptable heading into the season.

Kelvin Sheppard has already pointed to Whites experience as part of the appeal, but the bigger picture is still centered on how the group sorts itself out once the pads stay on. Dan Campbell is also expected to offer an update on Malcolm Rodriguez after his ankle issue, adding another layer to a position battle that already has plenty riding on it. [Read more 🡒]
