Lions Win Came With A Price Fans Will Be Watching Closely

Despite their victory against the Cardinals, the Detroit Lions face challenges with significant injuries to key players White and Kennedy, impacting their roster depth ahead of the Packers clash.

The Detroit Lions left Arizona with a win, but they also left with two more injury headaches.

Devin White and Tom Kennedy both exited Sunday’s Week 5 game against the Cardinals with injuries, and Dan Campbell didn’t hide how serious they could be. White is expected to be out for a while, while Kennedy’s short-term outlook is also uncertain.

"Doesn't look good. I think Devin's probably gonna need surgery, broken forearm," Campbell said.

"It's unfortunate, I hate it because he was doing some good things for us this game. And then, TK, it doesn't look good as far as anything short-term.

We'll know a lot more tomorrow. I think it could be a sprain, somewhere in there, a pretty good sprain.

But neither one of them are gonna be around for a bit here, I hate that. Both players have done a really good job here."

White, who was active for the first time since Week 2, went down late in the first quarter with a forearm injury. FOX showed him leaving the field on a cart, and he was later ruled out for the rest of the game. Afterward, reports said he left the locker room with his arm in a sling.

With White sidelined, Trevor Nowaske and Malcolm Rodriguez handled most of the linebacker snaps in his place. White, signed by Detroit less than a week into training camp this summer, has 10 total tackles in three games with the Lions.

Kennedy’s injury came later in the first half, and it happened on a 22-yard return when his foot got caught in the turf at State Farm Stadium and his right knee bent awkwardly.

"TK, I really thought hit it. We kind of challenged him on getting some of these returns.

His first was outstanding," Campbell said. "His second one, he caught it and put his foot in the ground.

He took it to heart, and I hate it for him that that happened. But, I don't think it's long, long-term.

I think this is something that, we're gonna miss him for a little bit."

Kennedy was able to walk off at first, but after being checked in the blue tent, he was carted to the locker room and ruled out for the second half. He finished with two punt returns for 33 yards.

The Lions are already thin at receiver, with Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Isaac TeSlaa and Tay Martin the only other wideouts on the active roster. Detroit also has Lawrence Keys, Lucky Jackson and Dominic Lovett on the practice squad.

St. Brown took over punt return duties after Kennedy exited and logged two returns for 36 yards, including a 31-yard runback on his first try of the day.

In all, St. Brown finished with 105 all-purpose yards in Detroit’s road win.

The Lions now head into their bye week before returning for a Week 7 NFC North matchup with the Green Bay Packers.

Lions Head Into Bye With Real Momentum And One Defensive Concern

The Lions went into their bye week carrying the kind of momentum every team wants, fresh off a win over the Cardinals that featured important contributions on both sides of the ball. Jahmyr Gibbs was a steady force in the backfield, helping the offense with his running and his work in pass protection, while Sam LaPorta turned in one of his better outings with solid receiving production and a touchdown. It was the sort of balanced performance that can make a break week feel a lot better.

Even so, Detroits defense left the field with one issue that has lingered for a while: tight ends. The Lions were better in man coverage than they had been, but Arizona found repeated success attacking that position, and that is the sort of vulnerability opponents will keep probing until the Lions prove they can close it down. With the bye offering a chance to reset, that matchup problem now becomes one of the more important items on the postweek checklist. [Read more 🡒]

Lions Gave Fans Real Hope And One Big Debate After Arizona

A shaky opening in Week 5 could have turned into one of those frustrating afternoons, but Detroit settled in fast against Arizona and spent the rest of the game looking like a team capable of handling the moment. Once the Lions found their footing, both sides of the ball started to click, with the offense solving things through the air and on the ground while the defense tightened up in a way that has to encourage a team still searching for consistency.

Arizona may not be the measuring stick that settles every question, but Detroits response still mattered because it looked cleaner and more complete than what many other teams have managed against the Cardinals this season. The bigger debate now is less about whether the Lions flashed real hope and more about how much of this performance represents a true step forward, especially after a start that could have easily sent the day in a different direction. Jahmyr Gibbs Is Pushing The Lions Toward Something Rare

Jahmyr Gibbs keeps giving the Lions a different kind of weekly problem for opponents to solve. In Detroits 45-21 win over Arizona, the running back ripped through the Cardinals for 151 yards and two touchdowns, giving the offense the kind of balance that can change the tone of a game in a hurry.

The bigger significance came with his second score, which pushed him into rare company in league history and put his name ahead of Barry Sanders on a mark tied to career touchdowns before age 25. With Detroit sitting 3-2 and tied for second in the NFC North, Gibbs is not just piling up highlights, he is nudging the Lions toward something that feels a little more historic every week.
