The Detroit Lions are gearing up to add a fresh twist to their already iconic uniforms. Set to debut in 2026, the Lions will unveil their new "Rivalries" uniform, part of the NFL's collaboration with Nike.
This initiative, reminiscent of MLB's "City Connects," kicked off in 2025, bringing new designs to the NFC West and AFC East. Now, it's the Lions' turn, along with the rest of the NFC North and AFC South.
In a chat with Dave Birkett from the Detroit Free Press, Lions team president Rod Wood expressed his excitement about the new look. While he kept the details under wraps, he hinted that fans are in for a treat.
"I think fans are going to like it," Wood said, describing the design as "pretty cool" and a nice addition to their current uniform. However, he playfully dodged revealing specifics, joking about his upcoming retirement and the consequences of spilling the beans.
Speculation is swirling around what the new design might entail. The beloved "blueberries" could inspire an all-blue version, or perhaps the all-grays will make a comeback, possibly with the blue helmets that had a brief stint in 2024.
Fans will need to be patient, as the reveal is expected around July, similar to last year's timeline. The "Rivalries" uniform is slated for a special home game against a division rival in the 2026 season, with plans to use them for two more seasons if the program proves successful.
Wood is keen on maximizing the impact of the debut, suggesting prime-time matchups like a Monday night game against the Packers or a post-Thanksgiving Thursday clash. However, the Lions will definitely showcase these uniforms in Detroit, not during their designated home game in Munich, Germany.
While the Lions have safeguarded certain home games from being moved to Munich, the full NFL schedule release in May will provide clarity. If last year's schedule is any indication, fans can expect an official announcement by August on when the Lions will sport their new threads.
