Lions Suddenly Need A Rookie Linebacker To Grow Up Fast

Jimmy Rolder is poised for a pivotal role increase as the Detroit Lions grapple with linebacker injuries ahead of their Green Bay Packers clash.

The Lions are heading into Week 7 with a linebacker situation that has become impossible to ignore, and that opens the door for rookie Jimmy Rolder.

Detroit comes out of its Week 5 bye preparing for a visit from the Green Bay Packers, and while the injury picture is not nearly as grim as it was last season, the problem in the middle of the defense has grown. Jack Campbell, last season’s standout, has not gotten off to an elite start.

Devin White, signed this offseason to bring some pop, is now out for the season with a forearm injury. That leaves the Lions leaning harder on the rest of the group.

Derrick Barnes, Trevor Nowaske and Malcolm Rodriguez have each had moments, but the depth chart is thin enough that Detroit needs more than spot duty and flashes. That is where Rolder comes in. The rookie did not have a normal start to his season after a training camp injury set him back, but his workload has climbed since Week 3, and he has already chipped in five total tackles.

Now the Lions need that climb to turn into something more meaningful. Against Green Bay, Detroit will be looking for speed and coverage help in the middle of the field, and Rolder has shown the kind of range that can matter there. He will also have to do more than chase passing plays; the run game will test him too.

His athletic traits could end up being a real swing factor for the Lions. Detroit has spent all season searching for more reliable production at linebacker, and if Rolder’s range starts to show up consistently, it could give the defense a lift as the year wears on.

The question is how quickly the Lions can bring him along. Rolder is getting more work in practice and more snaps in games, but there is still a learning curve because of the time he lost earlier in camp. The team has taken a similar approach with Keith Abney II, easing him in while increasing his responsibilities, and the hope is that the same process can work here.

Linebackers coach Shaun Dion Hamilton addressed that challenge a few weeks ago, making clear that Detroit is focused on getting Rolder up to speed rather than dwelling on what he missed.

"I'd probably say after you miss the countless days of training camp (and) practices, you don't know what you don't know. So it's kind of like, 'Hey, let's see what he's got.'

You don't know until that person gets (on the field). So when you're talking about Week 4 of the season, we can't go back to training camp and wish he got this (or that).

That's my job as a coach to make sure he's ready to go come Sunday."

Detroit’s rookie class has produced more as the season has gone on, and Rolder has a chance to fit that pattern. It may take a while before he looks like a finished product, but the opportunity is here for him to make a fast impression.

Lions May Have Found The Real Key To Containing Packers Deep Shots

The Packers deep-ball game has been one of the more revealing parts of their offense so far, and the numbers point to a pretty clear pattern. Green Bay is far more willing to take those high-risk shots when the game is already tilting in its favor, especially in comfortable down-and-distance spots, while Detroits own deep passing has not shown the same kind of situational split.

For the Lions, that makes the early minutes feel especially important. If they can get on the board first and force Green Bay out of its preferred script, they may be able to blunt one of the Packers most dangerous weapons before it starts to snowball. The challenge is easier to identify than to solve, but the path is there if Detroit can control the scoreboard and make the Packers throw with more pressure on them. [Read more 🡒]

Lions Just Got A Real Opening In The NFC North Race

The NFC North race has suddenly opened up a bit for Detroit, and the reason has as much to do with the calendar as it does with what the Lions have already done on the field. Even though Minnesota is still ahead in the standings, Tankathons strength-of-schedule rankings point to a more favorable path for the Lions down the stretch, with several upcoming games that should give them a chance to keep stacking wins after the bye week.

Detroit still has plenty of work to do, but the matchup mix ahead looks friendlier than what Minnesota is facing. The Lions have divisional games and a handful of contests against teams with losing records on the schedule, while the Vikings are set to deal with a tougher closing stretch against stronger opponents, a setup that could swing the division race before long. Lions Post-Bye Ceiling May Hinge On One Defensive Starter

The Lions have plenty to like after three wins to open 2026, especially on offense, where the scoring has been rolling along at nearly 33 points per game. The defense has been a different story, giving up almost 30 a night and leaving some real work for the stretch after the bye. As the conversation turns to who can help stabilize things, Jack Campbell is one of the names drawing the most attention after a breakout 2025 season raised the bar for what he can be in the middle of this unit.

Campbell is not the only player the Lions need more from, with Jameson Williams and Isaac TeSlaa also part of the broader push to keep the offense carrying its share while the defense catches up. But the spotlight on Campbell feels especially sharp because the teams post-bye ceiling may depend on a defensive starter who was supposed to be one of its tone-setters. If Detroit is going to turn a good start into something sturdier, the next few weeks should tell the story. [Read more 🡒]
