The Lions got a clean Thursday practice report as they continued preparing for Sunday afternoon’s opener against the Saints at Ford Field.
Every player on the active roster was on the field, which is a welcome sight after Wednesday’s estimated report included some unexpected names. Thursday offered the first real look at where things stand.
Three players were limited: EDGE Derrick Moore (hamstring), DL Mekhi Wingo (groin), and DB Christian Izien (groin).
Moore’s hamstring issue was already expected to keep him “down for a little bit,” though Dan Campbell had said earlier in the week that he hoped he’d ”be ready to roll,” at this point in Week 1. Two straight limited practices, though, make his status something to watch.
Wingo has stood out in camp for his athleticism and versatility, but the groin injury could cut into what he can do, so his progress bears monitoring as game day gets closer.
Izien’s Week 1 availability wasn’t clear the last time Campbell spoke with the media, but getting work in on Thursday is at least a positive sign. If he’s ready to go, Detroit would get a major lift at nickel and on special teams.
On the full-practice side, LB Jimmy Rolder (hamstring), LB Trevor Nowaske (knee), CB Ennis Rakestraw (ankle), CB Keith Abney (hand), and S Thomas Harper (ankle) all took part.
Rolder’s second straight practice is encouraging, though the Lions could still be careful with him as he works back into game shape. With seven linebackers on the roster, they have room to be patient.
Nowaske’s late-camp leg injury doesn’t appear likely to threaten his availability, but the rest of the week will tell more.
Rakestraw and Abney were surprise additions to the report, so Friday’s update should be telling when Campbell speaks again. Even so, full practices are a strong sign.
Harper appears to be in good position to return this week, and the coaching staff sounds prepared to have him available.

Lions Open Week 1 With Pressure On Unproven Replacements
The Lions 2026 opener at home against the Saints comes with a little more scrutiny than usual, because several spots on the roster are being asked to hold up without much margin for error. Early in the season, Detroit is already dealing with the absence of key safeties Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch, which puts even more attention on the players who will be asked to fill in around them.
Jake Bates, Ennis Rakestraw, Thomas Harper, Avonte Maddox, Chuck Clark and Christian Mahogany are among the names carrying that pressure into Week 1. For some, its about proving they can handle bigger roles after injury concerns or uneven stretches, and for others its about showing they belong on a roster that expects to contend right away. How those replacement pieces look in the opener could shape the early tone of Detroits season. [Read more 🡒]
Lions Still Have One Roster Pressure Point Before A Real Super Bowl Push
The Lions have built themselves into a team with real January expectations, but the conversation around their next step still keeps circling back to the same place: defense. ESPNs Mina Kimes recently pointed to cornerback Denzel Ward as the kind of addition that could make sense if the right trade opportunity comes along, a reminder that even as Detroit has climbed into the leagues upper tier, there is still room to strengthen the back end of the roster.
It is the sort of pressure point that matters most for a team trying to make a true Super Bowl push, because the offense has already done enough to change the standard in Detroit. The question now is whether the Lions stay patient with what they have or keep their eye on impact options such as Joey Porter Jr. and other defensive upgrades that could raise the ceiling when the games matter most. Lions Make Late Roster Move As Tom Kennedys Role Suddenly Grows
The Lions made a late roster tweak by elevating wide receiver Tom Kennedy from the practice squad to the 53-man active roster, a move that points to an immediate role for him in the next game. Detroit also added defensive back Natrone Brooks to the practice squad, continuing to shuffle the back end of the roster as it manages depth heading into the week.
Kennedy is expected to suit up and handle punt return duties, giving the Lions another layer of reliability on special teams while keeping his receiver role available if needed. Brooks arrives with some versatility of his own, having recently moved from cornerback to safety after spending time with the Atlanta Falcons before joining Detroit. [Read more 🡒]
