Lions Suddenly Have A Linebacker Problem They Can't Ignore

The Detroit Lions bolster their linebacker depth amid injury concerns by adding former Cardinals and Titans player Owen Pappoe to their practice squad.

The Detroit Lions are adding help at linebacker, and Owen Pappoe is the latest name to land in the mix.

After a visit to the Allen Park Performance Center, the former Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans linebacker is expected to join Detroit’s practice squad, according to multiple reports. The move comes at a time when the Lions’ linebacker room has been stretched thin by injuries.

Detroit lost rookie Jimmy Rolder for the rest of the 2026 season because of a hamstring injury. Captain Jack Campbell is also still hospitalized after a neck injury he suffered in the second half of a 19-15 Week 8 win against a division rival.

Pappoe, 26, brings a profile that fits the kind of depth Detroit needs right now. According to an Athletic scouting report, "The Tigers’ two-year captain ran the fastest combine 40 (4.39) among the linebackers.

The 6-foot, 225-pounder isn’t particularly big, but was an effective leader/communicator in the middle of the Auburn defense who should benefit as a run-and-chase, weakside linebacker at the next level. Pappoe had a pair of 90-tackle seasons at Auburn."

The Lions have already been leaning on other options while sorting through the fallout from Campbell’s injury. Earlier this week, head coach Dan Campbell pointed to the depth already on hand and said the team was still evaluating its next step.

“Well, luckily we have some depth in there with (Malcolm Rodriguez) Rodrigo and (Trevor) Nowaske and (Derrick) Barnes. Those three guys and (Lions LB) Amen (Ogbongbemiga)’s been up for us, which is good," said the sixth-year NFL head man. "And then we have got (Joe) Bachie ready to roll.

"So, we may need a little bit of help. We’re looking at everything.

We’ll adjust as we go. (Lions Executive Vice President and General Manager) Brad (Holmes) and I will get together here this afternoon, tomorrow and figure some of this out.”

Campbell also addressed the situation more directly, making it clear the staff is trying to manage the injury while staying locked in on the next game.

“Well, I think we acknowledge it, right? I mean, it’s not going away," said Campbell.

"That is what it is and it’s important. And he’s important to us and that he’s okay is important.

And so we acknowledge that, we talk about it and at the same time we get ready for this next opponent. So, I think you kind of do a little bit of both, honestly.”

Lions May Finally Be Forced To Test Ahmed Hassanein

Ahmed Hassanein has spent this season on the Lions 53-man roster without getting into a game, which is a little surprising for a young pass rusher who flashed enough in the preseason to make people take notice. He brought pressure, finished plays and looked like the kind of developmental edge defender Detroit would want to keep close, even if the regular-season path to snaps has been crowded.

Now the door may be opening a bit. With D.J. Wonnum working through concussion protocol, the Lions could be looking for another body on the edge, and Aidan Hutchinson has already pointed to Hassanein as someone who may be ready for a chance. For a player who has been waiting on the sideline after earning his roster spot, this could be the week Detroit finally finds out what it has. [Read more 🡒]

Lions Suddenly Have A Linebacker Depth Issue They Must Address

The Lions are dealing with an unexpected shakeup at linebacker after injuries to Jack Campbell and Jimmy Rolder left the group thinner than planned. In response, Detroit has moved to shore up the room by creating roster space, a sign the team is trying to get ahead of a depth problem before it becomes a larger issue.

One of the names tied to the fix is Owen Pappoe, who was recently released by the Titans after previously being waived by the Cardinals. The roster shuffle has already included placing Rolder on injured reserve and waiving safety Bishop Fitzgerald, though the corresponding moves are still waiting on official announcement. Lions May Have A Clear Week 9 Edge Against Miami

Miamis loss to New England put a spotlight on an offense that has not always protected its quarterback well, and the film points to a few pressure points Detroit will be watching closely. Malik Willis has been holding the ball longer than Miami can afford, and the Dolphins front has given up enough disruption to make pass protection a real talking point heading into Week 9.

For the Lions, that kind of matchup can shape the whole plan. Miami still has defensive pieces that can create problems, including Josh Uche and Jacob Rodriguez, but the bigger question is whether Detroit can turn the Dolphins protection issues into consistent heat and force the game into the kind of rhythm the Lions want. How much of that edge carries over to Sunday is the part worth monitoring. [Read more 🡒]
