The Detroit Lions got an unexpected twist in their Week 5 inactive report: Devin White is not on it.
White, who had been inactive since Week 3, will be available for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals. That’s a notable shift for a linebacker room that has already had plenty of issues, and it comes in a game that feels urgent for Detroit.
The veteran’s start to the season has been rough. In only 51 snaps, White has allowed a 93.8 passer rating and produced just four tackles. His impact has been limited mostly to run defense, and even there, he hasn’t consistently made the kind of difference the Lions were hoping for.
Still, the move to keep him active suggests Detroit is either trying to find something, anything, that works in its linebacker group, or maybe hoping White can at least show enough ahead of the bye week to improve his trade value.
That depth could matter on Sunday. Jack Campbell is expected to have a heavy load against Trey McBride, so the Lions could use every available body at linebacker for tackling support.
Arizona also isn’t exactly backing away from the run. Rookie running back Jeremiyah Love was not ruled out for the game despite ankle injuries early in the season, and he enters with 223 rushing yards and one touchdown on 55 carries. Tyler Allgeier and Bam Knight are there as well, giving the Cardinals multiple ways to test Detroit’s front.
The bigger problem for the Lions remains the same. Campbell, Malcolm Rodriguez, and Derrick Barnes have all been part of a linebacker unit that has been badly exposed in passing situations, with the group allowing an ugly passing efficiency against quarterbacks this season. That has forced the defensive line to do a lot of the cleanup work, and when the first wave misses, the defense has had trouble stopping the damage.
White probably won’t be the cure for that. But with Detroit’s linebacker play under heavy scrutiny and Arizona capable of breaking out against the NFL’s last-rated passing defense, the Lions are clearly hoping a few extra snaps from White can help steady things, even if only a little.

Lions Fans Are Mourning A Personal Loss In Dan Millers Family
Cynthia Miller had long been part of the backdrop to Detroit Lions Sundays, a familiar presence for anyone who knew Dan Millers family and how deeply football ran through it. She was more than the announcers wife - she was a devoted Lions fan who made the team part of her own routine, showing up for home games and sharing in the seasons highs and lows with the same steady enthusiasm.
A memorial gathering and funeral service are scheduled for October 16 in Northville, and the loss has added a personal layer of sadness for a fan base that already feels close to the Miller family through Dans voice. For those who followed the Lions with her in the stands, her absence will be felt in a very real way, even as the family prepares to gather and remember her life. [Read more 🡒]
Lions Week 5 Inactives Bring One Huge Defensive Twist
The Lions Week 5 injury report brought a little bit of clarity and a little bit of churn as they lined up for Arizona, with several familiar names affected by the final inactive list. Cornerback Rock Ya-Sin and offensive lineman Ben Bartch were among the players ruled out, while safety Jalen Mills was elevated to the active roster and Tyler Conklin returned after missing two weeks.
What stands out most for Detroit, though, is the defensive wrinkle up front. Tyleik Williams is active and expected to start against the Cardinals, giving the Lions a fresh look in the middle of their defensive line at a time when every rotation decision matters. It is the kind of move that can quietly reshape the tone of a game before the first snap, even if the biggest answers will have to wait until the matchup unfolds. [Read more 🡒]
Lions Face A Few Crucial Lineup Calls Before Cardinals Game
The Lions head into their matchup with the Cardinals trying to bank another win before the bye, and the focus in Allen Park is squarely on how the lineup will shake out. Detroits depth chart has been taking shape around a mix of established starters, backups ready for bigger roles, and a few injured players whose availability has forced the staff to keep adjusting as the week unfolds.
A handful of the decisions are still tied to health, with some contributors already trending toward game-day uncertainty and others working their way back into the mix. The bigger picture for Detroit is not just getting through Sunday, but using this stretch to settle a few personnel questions that could matter even more once the team comes out of the bye and starts tightening up the interior of the lineup.
