The Lions have a hole to fill at outside cornerback, and it’s a real one. With Terrion Arnold’s arrest and subsequent release, Detroit suddenly has a sizable vacancy to address as training camp approaches.
There are internal options on the table. The Lions could lean on Roger McCreary or Rock Ya-Sin, or give third-year pro Ennis Rakestraw Jr. more run. But if Detroit decides to go outside the building, Browns cornerback Denzel Ward is the kind of name that jumps out immediately.
Ward brings plenty of appeal. He’s a five-time Pro Bowler who has spent his entire career in Cleveland, a place that has given him very little winning to celebrate.
Since the Browns drafted him No. 4 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, the team has produced only two winning seasons and has won just one playoff game. Cleveland is also coming off back-to-back sub-.500 seasons and last-place finishes in the AFC North, and it just shipped superstar EDGE Myles Garrett to the L.A.
Rams.
That all points to a franchise in rebuild mode. Even so, Ward hasn’t asked out. In fact, he recently said he "definitely" wants to stay in Cleveland.
The contract situation is where things get interesting. Ward is in the second-to-last year of the five-year, $100.5 million extension he signed in 2022, and he’s due $38MM over the next two seasons.
None of that money is guaranteed, according to OverTheCap. So while he may want to remain with the Browns, there’s also the obvious reality that he wants to get paid.
If Cleveland can’t meet his demands on a new deal, a trade starts to look a lot more realistic.
For Detroit, Ward would be a major upgrade over Arnold and would give Dan Campbell’s defense a strong outside partner for D.J. Reed. He’s been productive for most of his career, picking off at least two passes and breaking up at least 10 more in every season from 2018 through 2024.
Last season wasn’t his best stretch. Ward finished with a 59.2 overall grade and a career-worst 59.7 coverage grade from Pro Football Focus. Still, he’s a proven veteran, and that gives him a clear path to rebound in 2026.
The problem for the Lions is the price. Ward’s looming extension and the draft capital required to land him make this a tough fit.
The Browns would likely want multiple picks, probably spread across Day 2 and Day 3, to even consider moving a player like this. That kind of package may simply be too rich for Brad Holmes.
So while Ward makes sense on paper, the odds of Detroit actually making the deal feel slim.
