Lions Suddenly Get Surprise Pass Rush Chance

Lions GM Brad Holmes eyes a new opportunity to bolster the defense as A.J. Epenesa becomes a surprising option after a deal with the Browns falls through.

Brad Holmes, the Detroit Lions' GM, has strategically chosen not to splurge on an edge rusher in free agency, focusing instead on bolstering the offensive line. This decision explains their investment in center Cade Mays and the depth across the O-line. However, for fans eager to see a replacement for Al-Quadin Muhammad, this might not be the most comforting news.

But hold on-free agency isn't over. The Lions still have some cap space, thanks to Jared Goff’s contract restructuring.

Most of this is earmarked for their upcoming draft picks, but there's room for a savvy one-year deal with a veteran edge rusher like A.J. Epenesa.

Epenesa, who was initially set to join the Cleveland Browns, became available after concerns arose during his physical. This could be a golden opportunity for Holmes to snag a seasoned player at a bargain price.

Despite a challenging 2025 season with the Buffalo Bills, where Epenesa recorded 2.5 sacks, three batted passes, 28 pressures, and six quarterback hits, he remains a valuable depth option. His previous agreement with the Browns-a one-year deal worth up to $5 million-aligns with the type of contracts Holmes typically favors.

Given the questions surrounding Epenesa's physical, the price might even drop. While D.J.

Wonnum pairs well with Aidan Hutchinson, adding a veteran presence would strengthen the team, especially after losing Muhammad. If the Lions are eyeing an edge rusher in the draft, a seasoned addition would complement their strategy nicely.

Currently, the Lions' depth at edge rusher includes Tyler Lacy and Trevor Nowaske, both likely headed for the practice squad, along with Payton Turner, Wonnum, and Ahmed Hassanein. Hassanein is a bit of a mystery due to an early injury in his rookie year, so expectations for his impact remain tempered.

Epenesa presents an intriguing option for Holmes. While his physical condition raises some concerns, Holmes has never shied away from taking calculated risks. If Epenesa can pass the Lions' medical evaluations, he could be a smart, low-risk addition to the roster.
