The Detroit Lions moved quickly to shore up their linebacker depth, agreeing to a one-year deal with Devin White on Saturday, Aug. 1, just a day after rookie Jimmy Rolder exited training camp with a leg injury.
The signing was first reported by The Schultz Report.
White, 28, arrives with plenty of NFL mileage and a résumé that includes a career-high 174 tackles last season with the Las Vegas Raiders. Before that, he had stops in 2024 with the Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles.
He also spent five seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2019-23 after being taken No. 5 overall in the 2019 draft out of LSU, and he won a Super Bowl there. In 2020, he was named a second-team All-Pro.
Detroit’s top two linebacker spots are set with Jack Campbell and Derrick Barnes, but the Lions have been searching for a third option after Alex Anzalone (Bucs). Rolder had been in that mix, working mostly at middle linebacker with the second-team defense before the injury.
The rookie, a fourth-round pick from Michigan, overcame early college injuries and became one of the Wolverines’ best defenders last fall. He led the team with 73 tackles and earned second-team All-Big Ten honors.
Rolder and defensive tackle Alim McNeill (neck) both left Friday’s practice with trainers midway through the session. The Lions were off Saturday and are scheduled to return to the field Sunday.
Detroit’s first preseason game is set for Aug. 13 at Cincinnati, with kickoff at 7 p.m.
