The Detroit Lions are making waves this offseason, bolstering their defensive front with the signing of former New Orleans Saints first-round pick, Payton Turner. This move, confirmed by NFL insider Ari Meirov, brings a seasoned pass rusher into the Lions' fold.
Turner, now 27, last saw game action in the 2024 season with the Saints, where he showcased his potential by delivering a standout performance. Over 16 games, he tallied 21 tackles-10 solo and 11 assisted-along with two sacks, two forced fumbles, four passes defended, and a tackle for loss.
Originally drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Turner has faced his share of injuries but has consistently flashed talent when healthy. His arrival in Detroit adds valuable depth to a defensive line that’s gearing up for the 2026 season.
The Lions have been on a signing spree, clearly focused on shoring up their defense. Just a day before Turner’s signing, they brought in veteran linebacker Damone Clark on a one-year deal. Clark, entering his fifth season, has previously played for the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans, adding experience to the linebacker corps.
But it’s not just the defense getting attention. The Lions also inked a deal with former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Greg Dortch, and earlier in the week, they signed pass rusher DJ Wonnum from the Carolina Panthers for $6 million. These moves signal Detroit’s commitment to strengthening both sides of the ball as they prepare for the upcoming season.
With these strategic additions, the Lions are setting themselves up to be a formidable force, blending seasoned veterans with emerging talent. As the new league year unfolds, Detroit fans have plenty to be optimistic about.
