The Detroit Lions are in the market for more certainty behind their starting quarterback, and that could send them looking to Pittsburgh before Week 1.
Teddy Bridgewater’s retirement during training camp left Detroit with a real question at backup quarterback. The Lions brought in Joshua Dobbs, but his preseason showing did not fully answer the concern. That’s why Mason Rudolph has emerged as a name to watch.
Christopher Kline of FanSided recently identified Rudolph as a trade candidate after the Steelers kept four quarterbacks on their roster. Pittsburgh’s quarterback room currently includes Aaron Rodgers, Mason Rudolph, Drew Allar and Will Howard.
“The Steelers kept all four quarterbacks on their roster: Aaron Rodgers, Mason Rudolph, Drew Allar and Will Howard,” Kline wrote.
He also added, “While Rodgers and probably Allar are the only names exempt from trade speculation, Rudolph feels more vulnerable than Howard at this stage. The latter didn’t exactly impress in preseason action, but he’s only in his second NFL season, with greater upside than Rudolph and plenty of organizational faith in his abilities.”
Rudolph would give Detroit something it clearly lacks right now: experience. He is entering his seventh NFL season and has 19 career starts under his belt. In those games, he has gone 9-9-1.
As a backup, Rudolph has completed 64.4% of his 738 career passes, with 30 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. That stack up favorably against Dobbs, who has completed 62.8% of his passes in 15 career starts and owns a 3-12 record. Dobbs has 17 touchdowns and 15 interceptions on 559 attempts.
Detroit also has rookie Luke Altmyer in the mix, but the Lions seem content to let him develop. Altmyer cleared waivers and went back to the practice squad, leaving the team with limited proven depth.
Of course, getting Rudolph out of Pittsburgh would not be simple. The Steelers have two young quarterbacks in Howard and Allar, but neither has NFL starting experience. Rudolph could still serve as insurance behind Rodgers while those younger passers keep growing.
Pittsburgh wants to win now while also building for the future. Rodgers and Rudolph give the Steelers experienced options for 2026, while Howard and Allar are positioned to compete for larger roles later on.
That puts both teams in a tough spot. Detroit could use Rudolph’s veteran presence, but Pittsburgh may not be eager to part with a quarterback it views as valuable depth. The Lions can make the call, but the price will decide whether anything happens.

The Lions still have some flexibility to sort through at wide receiver after trimming their group to four and opening up two roster spots. With depth always a priority in a long season, Detroit is at least looking at ways to add another body to the room, and veteran Nick Westbrook-Ikhine has emerged as one possibility after spending time on the Colts practice squad.
Westbrook-Ikhine brings six years of NFL experience and has worked as an outside receiver, which gives him a clear fit in Detroits offensive mix.
