The headline here is the loss of rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold, who was placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. Arnold didn’t practice Monday, and while it’s not confirmed whether this is the same shoulder that sidelined him earlier in the year, the timing is tough.
That earlier injury had already raised concerns about his long-term availability, and now he’ll miss at least the next four games. The earliest he could return is the regular-season finale.
Through eight games, Arnold had been making a strong impression in Detroit’s secondary. He recorded one interception, eight pass breakups, and 31 tackles-numbers that speak to both his instincts and physicality. For a rookie, he wasn’t just holding his own; he was starting to look like a foundational piece in the Lions’ defensive backfield.
With Arnold out, the Lions will lean on D.J. Reed, Amik Robertson, and Rock Ya-Sin as their top corners. That trio brings experience and toughness, but there’s no sugarcoating the fact that Arnold’s absence leaves a noticeable gap in coverage, especially with the playoff race heating up.
In a corresponding move, the Lions claimed tight end Hayden Rucci off waivers from the Dolphins. Rucci adds depth to a tight end room that’s been in flux, and his arrival coincides with some movement at the position.
Tight end Shane Zylstra has been designated to return from injured reserve, officially opening his 21-day practice window. If he can get back up to speed, Zylstra brings familiarity and versatility that could help the offense down the stretch.
Meanwhile, the team made a surprising procedural move by placing veteran center Frank Ragnow on the retired list after he failed his physical. It’s a disappointing development for one of the Lions' most respected linemen, though the specifics of the situation remain unclear. Ragnow has been a steady force in the trenches when healthy, and his departure-whether temporary or permanent-leaves a leadership void up front.
The Lions also made several practice squad adjustments. They signed wide receiver Andrew Armstrong, tight end Giovanni Ricci, and running back Jabari Small to the squad, adding fresh legs and potential depth options. On the flip side, they released defensive back Tre Flowers and offensive guard Netane Muti.
All told, it’s been a busy day in Allen Park. With the regular season winding down and postseason hopes still very much alive, the Lions are clearly trying to patch holes and recalibrate on the fly. The loss of Arnold stings, no doubt, but there’s still time for this team to rally-especially if their depth can rise to the occasion.
