A playful video of Detroit Lions rookie defensive tackle Tyleik Williams has been making the rounds online, and it has stirred up a wave of reactions for a moment that appears to have been taken as lighthearted by the people in it.
In the clip, Williams is seen with his girlfriend at what looks like the team facility. She is wearing his helmet, and he gives her a quick smack across it.
His girlfriend later posted, “Got CTE now.” The exchange was later framed as a joke in her own post, with the moment described as obviously playful between the two.
Williams, the Lions’ first-round pick at No. 28 in the 2025 NFL Draft, was selected for his elite run-stuffing ability, agility for his size, and the production he put together at Ohio State. He spent four seasons there, developing from a disruptive rotational freshman into a defensive anchor on a national championship team. Over 51 games in college, he recorded 136 total tackles, 28 tackles for loss, and 11.5 sacks.
The viral footage has nonetheless drawn harsh backlash from some NFL fans on social media. Williams was brought in to be a disruptive piece for Detroit’s defense, but this off-field clip has become the focus of the conversation for now.
Lions general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell targeted Williams during the draft because of the traits he brought to the table on defense. Early in his college career, Williams also made a major body transformation, working with Ohio State’s nutrition staff to go from 360 pounds to 317 pounds.
That commitment to conditioning carried into his rookie season. During the 2025 NFL regular season, Williams played in all 17 games and made 10 starts.
He finished with 18 total tackles and 1 sack while working behind veterans Alim McNeill and DJ Reader, mainly helping to absorb double teams and clog space against the run. His late-season conditioning issues limited his snap counts and production, but the hope is that he has that under control and a breakout year is ahead.
