Lions May Finally Be Forced To Test Ahmed Hassanein

Aidan Hutchinson tips Ahmed Hassanein for his impending debut as the Detroit Lions face roster challenges, providing a fresh chance for the young player to prove his mettle.

Aidan Hutchinson thinks Ahmed Hassanein’s shot is coming soon.

The Lions edge rusher, who spent all of last season sidelined by a pectoral injury, has been on Detroit’s 53-man roster since a strong preseason, but he’s been inactive every week so far this year. That could change on Sunday against the 1-6 Miami Dolphins, especially with D.J. Wonnum in concussion protocol after an accidental friendly-fire hit from safety Brian Branch.

There’s still a chance Wonnum clears protocol and plays, but if he doesn’t, Hutchinson sees Hassanein as the next man up. Asked Tuesday about the possibility, per 97.1 The Ticket’s Will Burchfield, Hutchinson pointed to the young pass rusher.

"If I was a betting man I’d say Ahmed’s probably getting his opportunity this week," Hutchinson said.

Hutchinson also said Hassanein is "itching" to play and "can't wait" to get on the field.

The Lions have reasons to be patient. They drafted Derrick Moore in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft, and Wonnum has outperformed expectations this season. But the timing may be right to find out what Hassanein can do.

His preseason work offered a loud reminder. In his debut coming off the long recovery, Hassanein lined up against the Cincinnati Bengals’ starters and wasted no time making noise. He got to Joe Burrow for an early sack, added another sack and forced a fumble, and finished with four tackles.

He also logged five pressures on 21 pass-rushing snaps, according to PFF via A to Z Sports’ Mike Payton, and finished with an 89.9 Pro Football Focus grade - the highest on the Lions that day.

He didn’t add to the sack total in the final two preseason games, but he stayed disruptive. And he did it without Hutchinson drawing attention on the other side, which usually helps open things up for Detroit’s pass rushers.

If Hassanein gets the call Sunday and brings that same edge, the Lions may not feel Wonnum’s absence much at all.

Lions Suddenly Have A Linebacker Depth Issue They Must Address

The Lions are dealing with an unexpected shakeup at linebacker after injuries to Jack Campbell and Jimmy Rolder left the group thinner than planned. In response, Detroit has moved to shore up the room by creating roster space, a sign the team is trying to get ahead of a depth problem before it becomes a larger issue.

One of the names tied to the fix is Owen Pappoe, who was recently released by the Titans after previously being waived by the Cardinals. The roster shuffle has already included placing Rolder on injured reserve and waiving safety Bishop Fitzgerald, though the corresponding moves are still waiting on official announcement. Lions Suddenly Have A Linebacker Problem They Can't Ignore

The Lions have been forced to keep an eye on their linebacker room as injuries continue to thin out the group, and the front office has already started looking for help. Owen Pappoe, who has spent time with the Cardinals and Titans, visited the Allen Park Performance Center and is expected to join Detroits practice squad as the team tries to stabilize a position that suddenly needs more bodies.

Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes have been working through the roster with that urgency in mind, knowing the depth chart can change quickly this time of year. With Jimmy Rolder unavailable and Jack Campbell also dealing with an injury, Detroit is left searching for answers while trying to preserve enough flexibility to get through the next stretch. Lions May Have A Clear Week 9 Edge Against Miami

Miamis loss to New England put a spotlight on an offense that has not always protected its quarterback well, and the film points to a few pressure points Detroit will be watching closely. Malik Willis has been holding the ball longer than Miami can afford, and the Dolphins front has given up enough disruption to make pass protection a real talking point heading into Week 9.

For the Lions, that kind of matchup can shape the whole plan. Miami still has defensive pieces that can create problems, including Josh Uche and Jacob Rodriguez, but the bigger question is whether Detroit can turn the Dolphins protection issues into consistent heat and force the game into the kind of rhythm the Lions want. How much of that edge carries over to Sunday is the part worth monitoring. [Read more 🡒]
