Lions Linked to Solution for Last Season's Major Challenge

The Detroit Lions may turn to free agency to solidify their offensive line, with Hjalte Froholdt emerging as a prime candidate to fill a critical gap.

When a four-time Pro Bowler like Frank Ragnow steps away from the game, especially in June, it leaves a gaping hole that’s tough to fill. The Detroit Lions faced this challenge head-on last year when Ragnow announced his retirement, putting the team in a tight spot with limited options in free agency and the draft already concluded.

General Manager Brad Holmes has often described the offensive line as the driving force of the Lions' offense. So, when Ragnow retired, the urgency to replace him became a top priority.

Ragnow attempted a comeback late last season, but an injury discovered during his physical dashed those hopes. Both Holmes and quarterback Jared Goff have since confirmed that a return in 2026 isn’t on the table.

This offseason, the Lions are focused on restructuring their interior line. Tate Ratledge is a lock as a starter, ideally at right guard where he thrived as a rookie. However, he could shift to center if needed, depending on offseason moves.

The search for Ragnow’s replacement has led to speculation, with Lions beat writer Dave Birkett highlighting free agency as the best route. While fans might dream of signing top free agent Tyler Linderbaum, the reality points to more budget-friendly options.

Birkett has zeroed in on Hjalte Froholdt as a strong candidate, should he be released by the Arizona Cardinals. Froholdt’s connection with Lions' offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, who previously coached him in Arizona, makes this a likely match. Froholdt has been a consistent performer, starting every game at center for the Cardinals over the past three seasons, and earning top-15 grades from Pro Football Focus.

With the Cardinals in a rebuilding phase under new head coach Mike LaFleur, Froholdt might not fit into their future plans. Cutting him would clear significant cap space, making his availability a real possibility. If he becomes a free agent, Froholdt's familiarity with Petzing’s system would make him a prime target for the Lions, potentially making this move not just likely, but almost inevitable.
