The Detroit Lions are adding another veteran to the linebacker room, agreeing to sign former All-Pro Devin White, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
White arrives with plenty of name recognition and a resume that once looked headed for stardom. The former fifth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers burst out of the gate with a second-team All-Pro season and a Super Bowl title by his second year.
But after four productive seasons in Tampa, his career took a sharp turn. He signed with the Eagles in 2024 and never played a snap for them, then spent a half season in Houston before appearing in all 17 games for the Las Vegas Raiders last year.
The production has still shown up in bursts. In 2025, White finished third in the NFL in tackles with 174, just behind Detroit’s Jack Campbell.
Even so, the underlying evaluation has been less flattering. He has never posted a PFF grade above 57.0 in a season, with coverage and run defense both continuing to be problem areas.
Detroit’s move comes at a time when the team has been making changes at linebacker. White is the second addition at the position in the last week after Troy Reeder signed at the start of training camp.
The timing also lines up with a setback on Friday, when rookie linebacker Jimmy Rolder suffered a leg injury and did not return. At this point, the severity of that injury is not known.
Per Justin Rogers, the signing is tied to Rolder’s injury, which will reportedly keep him out “a while.”
White now has a path to compete for a reserve job, though the starting spots appear to be spoken for with Jack Campbell, Derrick Barnes, and Malcolm Rodriguez in place. Still, his experience and athletic tools give him a real shot to carve out a situational role on defense.
