Lions Get An Early Week 9 Test Miami Could Complicate

The Lions are favored to continue their winning streak as they face a rebuilding Dolphins team navigating major roster changes in their Week 9 NFL matchup.

The Lions are headed to Florida in Week 9, and the betting market opened with Detroit laying a touchdown. FanDuel Sportsbook installed the Lions as 7-point favorites over the Dolphins, a line that reflects where these two teams are right now: one pushing through the bumps of a season that’s starting to stabilize, the other deep into a reset.

Detroit comes in at 5-2 and has won three straight, with back-to-back division victories helping steady the start. Miami, meanwhile, is sitting at 1-6 and trying to piece together the early stages of a rebuild under a completely new setup.

That overhaul came fast. The Dolphins moved on from general manager Chris Grier and coach Mike McDaniel after four unsuccessful seasons, then brought in Jon-Eric Sullivan as GM and former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley as head coach.

The new group wasted little time reshaping the roster, cutting veteran contracts for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, wide receiver Tyreek Hill, and edge rusher Bradley Chubb. They also dealt former first-round pick Jaylen Waddle for a package of three picks aimed at the 2026 NFL Draft.

At quarterback, Miami turned to Malik Willis, who most recently played in Green Bay with Hafley. The Dolphins also poured resources into the draft, adding six rookie starters: first-round picks guard Kadyn Proctor and corner Chris Johnson, second-round linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, third-round receivers Chris Bell and Caleb Douglas, and fifth-round safety Michael Taaffe. On top of that, they have eight more rookies on the 53-man roster, leaving more than a quarter of the team - 14 players - in their first year.

The results have looked like a team still learning on the fly. Miami opened with a two-touchdown loss to the Raiders, then dropped games to the 49ers by three touchdowns and the Chiefs by two touchdowns.

The margin tightened in Week 4, when the Vikings beat them by five, and again in Week 5, when the Bengals won by seven. The breakthrough came in Week 6, when the Dolphins edged the Jets by three for their first win.

They nearly pulled off another one on Sunday against the Patriots. Miami took a 13-3 lead into halftime, but New England answered with 21 straight points to move ahead 24-13 late in the fourth quarter. Willis hit an explosive touchdown pass at the 2-minute warning to cut the gap, but the Dolphins couldn’t finish the job, failing on the 2-point try and then on the onside kick in a 24-19 loss.

Lions Win Took A Back Seat To One Frightening Jack Campbell Scene

Detroits 19-15 win over Minnesota came with the kind of unease that can linger long after the final whistle. The Lions had already been dealing with injuries on defense during the game, but the biggest concern arrived in the fourth quarter when linebacker Jack Campbell went down and the mood inside the stadium shifted immediately.

Campbell was hurt on a tackle attempt and remained on the turf for an extended stretch before being helped off the field on a stretcher. He was later taken to a hospital for evaluation, turning a hard-fought divisional victory into a night the Lions will remember for far more than the result. [Read more 🡒]

Lions Face Early Trouble In A Game That Could Shake Up NFC North

Week 8 in the NFC North came with a little extra weight for Detroit, and the first quarter against Minnesota already had the feel of a game that could matter long after Sunday. The Vikings got the opening kickoff and immediately had a chance to set the tone, while the Lions answered with some early movement of their own, including a third-down conversion from Amon-Ra St. Brown before the offense ran into a choppy stretch.

The opening frame never settled in for either side, with penalties and missed field goals helping turn what should have been a clean division showdown into a stop-start grind. Detroit needed a steady hand to keep pace in a game with first-place implications, but the early rhythm kept getting interrupted, leaving plenty of tension on the field and even more riding on how the rest of the afternoon would unfold. Lions Fans Are Already Buzzing About Ford Fields New Food Stand

Ford Fields latest concession addition arrived with a distinctly Detroit flavor on Oct. 25, when Moms Spaghetti made its debut at the Lions game. Inspired by Eminems Lose Yourself, the restaurants food stand brought spaghetti and meatballs, along with the Sghetti sandwich, into the stadium mix through a partnership with Levy, Ford Fields food and beverage partner.

The stand is set to travel with the Lions again for the game in Munich, Germany, giving the team another local touchpoint far from home. It also comes with a community-minded angle, since the volunteer staff working the stand benefits various organizations, which fits neatly with the kind of neighborhood feel the Lions have tried to build around their home games.
