On his Nightcap podcast with Shannon Sharpe, Johnson claimed he heard that the fan used a racial slur and insulted Metcalf’s mother, which, if true, would cast the entire situation in a much different light.
“I got word-obviously, I’m not condoning putting your hands on a fan-but he did call [Metcalf] a racial slur,” Johnson said. “He called him the N-word, and he did call his mom a [expletive]. I think with those words being exchanged and the fan saying that, that’s where the action occurred.”
As of now, the league hasn’t issued any formal discipline, but given the NFL’s track record with player-fan interactions, a response seems likely. The league typically takes these situations seriously, especially when there's video evidence and allegations of physical contact.
