Josh Allen and Jahmyr Gibbs are set up to light up Thursday night, but Detroit is walking into Buffalo with a real problem in front of it.
The Week 2 Thursday Night Football meeting in the 2026 season has the kind of star power the NFL loves. Allen is fresh off a 334-yard outing in Buffalo’s 36-31 win over Houston, while Gibbs just powered Detroit through an overtime escape against New Orleans with 156 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Both teams are 1-0, both offenses have already shown they can produce when things tighten up, and both are carrying plenty of momentum into a game that should have no shortage of big plays.
For the Lions, though, the headline is what’s missing. Starting left guard Christian Mahogany and right tackle Blake Miller have been ruled out, leaving Detroit without two starters against a Buffalo defense that did enough to survive C.J.
Stroud and the Texans. The Lions needed overtime to edge New Orleans 31-30 even with Gibbs handling 29 carries and Amon-Ra St.
Brown hauling in two touchdown passes. Detroit held the ball for nearly 37 minutes, but its defense still gave up 469 total yards.
That’s the kind of number that can turn into a problem fast with Allen on the other sideline.
Buffalo has issues of its own, even after opening with a win. The Bills let Houston control the ball for more than 36 minutes in Week 1 and surrendered 381 yards, though their offense answered with 409 of its own. Allen went 20 of 29 for 334 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, and Dalton Kincaid added 130 receiving yards to create another headache for Detroit in the middle of the field.
If the Lions want to keep this game in their control, the path runs through Gibbs and the ground game. Detroit ran for 165 yards against New Orleans, and long possessions would help keep Allen on the sideline while also protecting a defense that struggled against Tyler Shough and Chris Olave.
The problem is that the offensive-line injuries make that plan much harder to pull off. According to Pride of Detroit, Larry Borom is expected to step in for Miller, with Ben Bartch lined up to replace Mahogany.
The setting only adds to the stage. This will be Buffalo’s home opener at the new Highmark Stadium, and it’s hard to imagine a more explosive first prime-time test.

Gill-Howard has already sounded comfortable with his role, and with Buffalo next on the schedule, the question now is whether his first real impression turns into something the Lions can keep counting on as the matchups get tougher.
