The Detroit Lions are facing some serious challenges on the offensive line. With Frank Ragnow's uncertain status and Taylor Decker's departure, the once formidable unit is now in need of a revamp. Add to that a couple of draft picks who haven't quite hit their stride, and it's clear the Lions have work to do.
Giovanni Manu hasn't proven to be the answer at left tackle in 2026, and Christian Mahogany struggled with pass protection before a broken leg ended his sophomore season. There's a pressing need for improvement here, especially with Jared Goff, a classic pocket passer, relying heavily on solid protection.
Enter Kevin Zeitler, a potential game-changer in free agency. The idea of bringing Zeitler back to Detroit has been floated by insiders like Freddie Boston and Kristopher Knox, who see the Lions as a top destination for the veteran guard. The Los Angeles Chargers are also in the mix, boasting more cap space, but Detroit has its own allure.
Zeitler, who ranked as the 11th-best guard in Pro Football Focus's 2025 grades, still has plenty to offer. His consistency in both pass protection and run blocking makes him a valuable asset. It's curious why he doesn't get more attention league-wide, but perhaps that's just the nature of his position.
However, bringing Zeitler back to Detroit isn't without its challenges. Tate Ratledge, last year's impressive second-round pick, has solidified his spot at right guard.
With Zeitler's extensive experience almost exclusively at right guard, some reshuffling would be needed. Ratledge might have to shift to left guard to accommodate Zeitler.
Coach Dan Campbell and his staff have the savvy to make this work. There's been talk of moving Penei Sewell from right to left tackle and possibly targeting a left guard in the upcoming draft. The aim is to get the best five blockers on the field to support the Lions' dynamic offense.
With Goff having endured a career-high 38 sacks last season, he'd likely welcome Zeitler's return with open arms. Whether Zeitler lines up at right guard or elsewhere, his presence could be just what the Lions need to fortify their line and keep their quarterback upright.
