For the past few years, the Detroit Lions have enjoyed a dynamic backfield duo with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, both consistently racking up over 1,100 yards from scrimmage and scoring at least 11 touchdowns each season. However, 2025 saw a shift, as Gibbs took on a more prominent role, leaving Montgomery with a reduced presence.
In January, Lions General Manager Bud Holmes hinted that trading Montgomery might be on the table, potentially finding him a team where his talents could shine brighter. Yet, Montgomery remains under contract with the Lions for two more years, and both Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell have expressed a desire to keep him in Detroit.
Holmes mentioned ongoing discussions with Montgomery's agent, describing them as "healthy dialogue." He emphasized the team's appreciation for Montgomery, stating, "We love David.
He’s a great player. We’d love to have him.
We want to move past last year and look ahead. But, of course, a player needs to want to be in a certain place, so these conversations are still fluid."
Campbell echoed these sentiments, highlighting Montgomery's value to the team and noting that new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing shares this admiration. "Certainly, he knows how I feel," Campbell said.
"Drew loves him - who wouldn’t? This guy’s a heck of a back.
We’ll just see where everything’s at. There have been healthy conversations, and David’s a pro, so we’ll figure this out."
In 2025, Montgomery didn't start any games, yet he managed 716 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, along with 24 receptions for 192 yards. This followed a 2024 season where he rushed for 775 yards with 12 touchdowns and caught 36 passes for 341 yards in just 14 games. Interestingly, Montgomery's snap count only slightly decreased, from 41 percent in 2024 to 37 percent in 2025, showing that while his role shifted, his presence remained significant.
The Lions face an intriguing decision as they weigh Montgomery's future with the team. His proven track record and professionalism make him a valuable asset, and the ongoing conversations will determine whether he continues to be a key part of Detroit's offensive strategy.
