Lions Eyeing a Dream Scenario in the Draft to Solve Their Tackle Dilemma
The Detroit Lions are on the cusp of a Super Bowl run, but to get there, they need to address a couple of key areas: tackle and edge-rusher. A pivotal decision looms regarding Penei Sewell's role on the offensive line.
Sewell, a four-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro, has been a rock at right tackle. Yet, with Taylor Decker's departure, there's talk of shifting Sewell to left tackle-a move that could disrupt the current balance.
Enter Field Yates' latest mock draft for ESPN, which offers a tantalizing solution: Alabama's standout tackle, Kadyn Proctor, in the first round. Proctor, with his towering 6-7, 352-pound frame, brings both size and power, especially in the run game.
While his college tape shows moments of inconsistency, particularly against speedy edge rushers, his potential is undeniable. Starting all 40 games at Alabama, Proctor is as seasoned as they come for a college prospect.
Landing Proctor would allow Sewell to remain at right tackle, maintaining the line's stability. Proctor's prowess in both pass protection and run blocking makes him an ideal candidate to fill the left tackle void, with Larry Borom providing depth as a swing tackle.
But the draft plan doesn't stop there. Yates projects the Lions snagging Illinois pass-rusher Gabe Jacas in the second round.
Jacas, who racked up an impressive 11 sacks and forced three fumbles last season, would be a perfect complement to Aidan Hutchinson. His ability to disrupt offenses with 13.5 tackles for loss last year highlights his potential impact.
Jacas' presence would alleviate some of the pressure on Hutchinson, giving the Lions a formidable duo on the defensive front. While immediate double-digit sacks might not be necessary, Jacas' steady production could be a game-changer.
If Yates' mock draft pans out, the Lions would address two critical needs with Proctor and Jacas, positioning themselves as serious contenders. It's a scenario that could significantly bolster their roster and push them closer to that coveted Super Bowl appearance.
