The Detroit Lions’ coaching staff has been a major part of the team’s rise, and now one of their key assistants is drawing interest from outside the building. According to multiple reports, Scottie Montgomery - currently Detroit’s assistant head coach and wide receivers coach - has been requested to interview for the Baltimore Ravens’ offensive coordinator position.
Montgomery’s name might not be on every fan’s radar, but inside league circles, he’s earned a ton of respect. He joined the Lions in 2023 as the assistant head coach and running backs coach, and it didn’t take long for his fingerprints to show up on the offense.
That year, he helped guide a backfield that featured rookie Jahmyr Gibbs and veteran David Montgomery. Gibbs flashed the explosiveness that made him a first-round pick, while Montgomery pounded out a 1,015-yard, 13-touchdown season - his most productive campaign as a pro.
That kind of balance between youth and experience? It doesn’t just happen.
Montgomery helped make it work.
When the Lions brought in Tashard Choice to take over the running backs room this past season, Montgomery shifted to coaching wide receivers - and again, his impact was immediate. Jameson Williams, in particular, took a significant leap forward.
The former first-rounder posted a career-high 1,117 receiving yards and finally started to look like the multifaceted threat Detroit hoped he’d become. Under Montgomery’s guidance, Williams expanded his route tree and became more than just a vertical burner.
He turned into a reliable, versatile option - a real weapon that defenses had to account for on every down.
Head coach Dan Campbell has spoken glowingly about Montgomery’s value to the team. Back in October, Campbell said, “Scottie understands this game very well, top to bottom - pass game, protection, run game.
He’s a huge asset for us and for me.” That’s high praise from a coach who doesn’t hand out compliments lightly.
Now, Montgomery could be in line for a major step forward. The Ravens are in the midst of a transition, having recently hired Jesse Minter as their new head coach.
With Minter coming from a defensive background, he’ll be leaning heavily on whoever takes the reins of the offense. That makes the OC hire a critical one - and Montgomery is clearly viewed as a serious candidate.
Even though there’s no direct connection between Minter and Montgomery, the fact that Baltimore is reaching out speaks volumes about Montgomery’s reputation across the league. He’s seen as a smart, adaptable offensive mind with leadership chops - and those qualities are always in demand, especially for a team looking to keep pace in an increasingly complex NFL landscape.
For the Lions, it’s a bit of a double-edged sword. Losing Montgomery would hurt - he’s been a key part of the culture and development inside that locker room.
But it’s also a testament to what Detroit has built. When your assistants start getting calls for top jobs elsewhere, it’s a sign you’re doing something right.
