Lions Are Suddenly Tied To A Trade Deadline Gamble Worth Watching

As the NFL trade deadline looms, the Chargers face a critical decision on whether to capitalize on player trades for future growth, with the potential move of star player Khalil Mack generating significant buzz.

The Chargers don’t have to wait until the offseason to start thinking bigger, and that’s exactly why a trade deadline sell-off makes so much sense. With the season gone sideways, Los Angeles has a chance to use the next few days to clean out veterans, collect future picks and stop pretending this roster is closer to contention than it is.

A lot of the conversation will naturally start with Khalil Mack. He’s the obvious name, and for good reason: the veteran pass rusher still carries real value for a contender, even if the Chargers are no longer in a position to use him the way they hoped. ESPN’s Bill Barnwell pushed that idea further in a new column, laying out a deal with the Detroit Lions that would send Mack and cornerback Donte Jackson to Detroit in exchange for fourth- and sixth-round picks in 2027.

Barnwell also raised the possibility that Los Angeles could absorb part of the money both players are still owed to increase the return. As he put it: “They could alternately want to eat some of that money to add more draft capital in a potential trade and think the picks are a better use of the cash than players who would be playing out the string for a hopeless team.”

It’s not a flashy haul, and a fourth-rounder is hardly the kind of return that makes headlines on its own. But Mack is 35, on an expiring contract and was just weighing retirement. The Chargers also don’t have much negotiating power sitting at 0-6 and counting.

Jackson fits the same deadline logic. He’s on an expiring deal, he’s getting older, and he’s the kind of veteran a contender would make a move for if it wants to strengthen the secondary right now.

The payoff for Los Angeles wouldn’t stop with draft capital. Moving those players would also open the door for younger pieces to get real playing time, including Tuli Tuipulotu and rookie Akheem Mesidor off the edge, along with Cam Hart, Tarheeb Still and even Rodney Shelley at corner.

This isn’t the path the Chargers imagined by the bye week. But if they’re serious about what comes next, the trade deadline gives them a clean shot to reshape the roster and improve the long-term picture long before any bigger changes hit the coaching staff or Joe Hortiz’s front office.

Lions Get A Huge Week 7 Boost As LaPorta Drama Builds

A key piece of Detroits Week 7 preparation is starting to fall into place with reinforcements on the way as the Lions get ready for their first divisional game of the season against the Green Bay Packers. Brian Branch and Cade Mays are both expected to return without snap restrictions, giving Detroit a timely boost as the schedule turns to the NFC North and the margin for error gets thinner.

The bigger conversation, though, has lingered around Sam LaPorta after he aired frustration with his contract situation during a podcast. He later tried to smooth things over in a media scrum, making it clear he wants to be in Detroit and felt his comments had been taken the wrong way, but the episode added a little extra noise to a week the Lions would probably prefer to keep centered on football. Jared Goff Is Setting The NFC North Standard Right Now

Jared Goff has spent the first six weeks of the season doing exactly what the Lions want from their quarterback: keep the offense on schedule, protect the football and give Detroit a chance to win every Sunday. In a division filled with young talent and big-armed volatility, that steadiness has stood out enough to put him at the top of the NFC North quarterback conversation heading into Week 7.

The case for Goff is built on consistency more than flash, with his passing production and quarterback rating helping him separate from Caleb Williams, Jordan Love and Kyler Murray in the current rankings. The part that may matter most to Detroit, though, is how well he has paired efficiency with ball security, a combination that has become central to the Lions' offensive identity and a big reason he keeps setting the pace in the division. Lions Face A Costly Sam LaPorta Decision They Can't Delay

The Lions have not hidden their interest in keeping Sam LaPorta around long term, but the road to an extension has grown more complicated as his value keeps climbing. LaPorta, a 2023 second-round pick, has become one of the most important pieces of Detroits offense, and the team is also trying to keep an eye on other business, including a new deal for safety Brian Branch as he works his way back from injury.

For now, the conversation with LaPorta has slowed, with the clock inching toward the point where Detroit has to decide how aggressive it wants to be. Tight end prices across the league are moving up, and if the Lions want to prevent LaPorta from getting anywhere near free agency, they may have to consider a franchise tag that would carry a hefty price tag of its own.
