Kelvin Sheppard Reveals How Close He Came to Leading the Dolphins

Despite skepticism surrounding the Dolphins' hiring process, Lions DC Kelvin Sheppard remains confident he was seriously considered for their head coach position.

In January, Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard found himself in the mix for the Miami Dolphins head coaching position. Sheppard, reflecting on the experience, feels he was on the cusp of receiving an offer from the AFC team.

The Dolphins’ hiring process faced some scrutiny, particularly when they announced interviews with Sheppard and Patrick Graham-both minority coaches-on the same day they revealed Jeff Hafley as their new head coach. Critics argued this timing suggested the interviews were simply to fulfill the Rooney Rule requirements.

Sheppard, however, dismissed these criticisms, emphasizing his ongoing communication with the Dolphins prior to their decision.

“I was in talks with the Dolphins for about two weeks,” Sheppard explained. “Post-interview, three people from their front office reached out to me.

I won’t share specifics, but it felt genuine. And when Hafley mentioned to someone on my staff that they were close to hiring me, it seemed pretty real.”

Dolphins GM Jon-Eric Sullivan addressed the process, affirming that Sheppard and Graham were serious contenders who made a strong impression.

“Kelvin and Patrick were outstanding. They were genuine candidates,” Sullivan stated.

“There’s a certain pace you need to maintain to secure your choice. By then, it was clear Hafley was our target, and he had other opportunities, so timing was critical.”

Sullivan highlighted what stood out about Sheppard.

“Kelvin’s energy and room presence were remarkable. If you’re looking to build a strong team, Kelvin can lead.

His toughness and command were evident, and it wasn’t just for show,” Sullivan said. “We were all impressed.

I’m confident he’ll have more opportunities down the line.”

Sheppard acknowledged the opportunity, valuing the experience regardless of the outcome.

“Whether it was real or not, I got the chance to go through the process,” Sheppard remarked. “I learned a lot and grew from it, and that’s what I’m taking away.”
