Jon Gruden Just Put A Lions Rookie Defender On Fans' Radar

Detroit Lions rookie Keith Abney II shines in a new role against the Cardinals, earning high praise from Jon Gruden.

Jon Gruden saw enough from Keith Abney II to give the Detroit Lions rookie cornerback a spotlight all his own.

After Abney filled in at safety and helped Detroit roll past the Arizona Cardinals 45-21, the former NFL head coach tapped the fifth-round rookie as his “Gruden Grinder” this week. Gruden said Abney fit the profile because of the way he handled the moment, handled the position change and handled the pressure.

“A lot of people ask me, 'What a Gruden grinder is?' They're versatile.

A bit tough. Mentally tough.

They don't come unglued when things go wrong,” Gruden explained to his nearly 437,000 followers on social media. “They're team oriented and they're clutch.

They feel no pressure. They apply it.

Guys like Keith Abney II of the Detroit Lions. You know, nobody's been criticized more than the Detroit Lions defense.

Their defensive coordinator, Kelvin Sheppard, has held this group together.

“One of the best things he did was put in Keith Abney II. He wears No.

  1. He's 21-years-old.

He's a fifth-round rookie out of Arizona State. Why was he in the fifth round?

Well, maybe he not big enough. 5'9, 187-pounds. He goes to Arizona State, has limited play time in 2023,” Gruden explained further.

“But in 2024, he bursts onto the scene. Three interceptions, Nine pass breakups, 52 tackles.

Then in 2025, he's All Big-12. Two picks, two forced fumbles, lot of ball production, 12 passes broken up.”

Abney’s first start came with veteran Christian Izien out of the lineup after struggling badly against the Carolina Panthers, and Detroit paired the rookie with veteran Chuck Clark to steady a back end that had already given up too many explosive plays early this season.

“Against the Arizona Cardinals, Abney returns home to Arizona, where he built the foundation that got him to the NFL,” Gruden said. “He gets his first start.

He has six solo tackles. He has his first interception and a pass broken up.

And the Detroit Lions, not nly got five sacks, they have five straight three-and-outs against the Arizona Cardinals. A lot of it has to do with Keith Abney II.

Instincts, versatility and mentality. This guy is a true grinder, and his career just got launched.

Keep it up Keith.”

The Cardinals offered a favorable test for the rookie, too. Arizona has struggled to throw deep this season, and the absence of Marvin Harrison Jr., who was inactive in Week 5, made the challenge easier for Detroit’s defense as it dealt with the rest of the offense.

Lions Fans Are Split On Brad Holmes For One Big Reason

Brad Holmes has built enough goodwill in Detroit to keep the discussion interesting, but the fan base is hardly speaking with one voice anymore. A recent poll on his job performance reflects that split, with some supporters still buying into the long-term plan and others focusing more on the areas that have not looked as sharp.

The biggest flashpoint has been the 2024 draft class, where the conversation has turned critical around the way the roster has held up at cornerback. At the same time, Holmes still has a strong case to make for himself through the way he has reshaped both lines, and that balance is what makes the reaction around his work so revealing right now. Lions Suddenly Have One More Packers Problem To Worry About

The Packers may be getting a timely boost just as the NFC North race starts to tighten up. Josh Jacobs is expected to be taken off the NFL commissioners exempt list and become eligible to play starting in Week 7, which puts his season debut in play against Detroit. For Green Bay, that would mean another layer of help for a run game that could use it in a divisional matchup with real early-season weight.

Jacobs has been sidelined since being placed on the exempt list after a May arrest, and the NFLs investigation is still ongoing because of unresolved evidence issues. Even so, the expectation is that he will be cleared to return to football activity right away, which gives the Packers a potential offensive reinforcement just as the Lions are preparing for one more problem to solve in the division. Two Lions Head Into The Bye With Their Roles Suddenly In Doubt

The Lions head into the bye with a pair of role questions hanging over the roster after the Week 5 win over the Cardinals. TeSlaa, who had been coming on with two strong outings, finished without a catch for the first time since Week 1, a reminder that even young players who seem to be gaining traction can hit a pause just as the picture starts to sharpen.

Iziens situation looks even murkier after a rough Week 4 and then no action at all against Arizona. For a team trying to sort out the back end of the roster and keep momentum going into the break, those two cases stand out because they are not just about one game, but about whether either player can reclaim a steadier place in Detroits plans once the Lions return.
