Jared Goff Faces A Lions Test That Could Decide Sunday

Despite the Minnesota Vikings' formidable blitz-heavy defense, Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff is poised to exploit weaknesses and lead his team to a potential triumph.

The Detroit Lions are about to see one of the league’s most aggressive defenses, and that makes Sunday’s matchup with the Minnesota Vikings even more interesting. Minnesota comes in undefeated at 6-0, with most of its success fueled by a defense that has made a habit of wrecking opposing rhythm. But when it comes to blitz-heavy football, Jared Goff has already shown he can stay upright and keep producing.

That matters, because the Vikings don’t just send pressure - they live with it. Minnesota blitzes on 68.4% of pass plays, according to NFL NextGen Stats, while the next closest team, the Washington Commanders, sits way back at 42.3%.

The tactic has bothered plenty of quarterbacks this season. Goff, though, has been operating in a different lane.

He’s thrown zero interceptions with 14 touchdowns so far, and he has put up strong numbers even when defenses come after him.

Against the blitz, Goff has completed 64% of his passes, which ranks fifth, while piling up 842 yards, good for ninth. He’s also tied for third with seven touchdowns and owns a 109.6 passer rating, which ranks second.

The offensive line deserves part of the credit, but Goff has been sharp enough to make the pressure look manageable. The question now is whether that holds up against Minnesota.

Detroit’s protection has been trending the right way, too. The Lions gave up just one sack last week against the Green Bay Packers, marking the third time this season they’ve allowed only one. The Buffalo Bills got to Goff four times in Week 2, but the line has looked steadier since then, especially with center Cade Mays back in the mix.

That matters because the Vikings can rush the passer in waves. Minnesota is tied with four other teams, including Detroit, for the league lead with 21 sacks.

Even more striking, it has three players with at least four sacks, more than any other team. Dallas Turner is leading the charge, tied for third in the NFL with 6.0 sacks, while Blake Cashman has 4.5 and Andrew Van Ginkel has 4.0.

Detroit, though, has its own strength up front. Christian Mahogony and Tate Ratledge have been as good as anyone at guard.

Per Pro Football Focus, Mahogony owns the top pass-blocking grade at 83.8, and Ratledge isn’t far behind at 80.4. With Mays in the middle and Penei Sewell and Blake Miller on the edges, the Lions have one of the NFL’s best offensive lines through seven weeks.

One receiver who could benefit from all of that is Amon-Ra St. Brown.

He has been Goff’s favorite target when the pocket gets noisy, and the production backs it up. Against the blitz, St.

Brown is tied for third in targets with 25, tied for fourth in receptions with 16, and tied for second in touchdowns with 3.

Minnesota is also No. 10 against the run, so Jahmyr Gibbs may have to earn every yard he gets. Still, the bigger concern for the Vikings is on the other side of the ball. Their offense has produced only nine touchdowns this season, tied for last in the NFL, and that opens the door for Detroit to keep pace and, if Goff keeps handling the pressure, come away with the win.

Lions Trade Deadline Debate Comes Down To One Risky Cornerback Choice

The Colts decision to move on from Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner for future draft picks has only sharpened the trade deadline conversation around their roster, and it should have the Lions paying attention. If Indianapolis is truly in seller mode, Detroit could find itself looking at a rare opportunity to add help at cornerback, where a proven veteran or a younger high-end starter would fit a clear need as the deadline approaches.

Charvarius Ward and Sauce Gardner are the names to watch, and each comes with a different kind of gamble. Ward brings experience but also age, a serious concussion history and an expiring contract, while Gardners talent is obvious even if the price tag is not, with a hefty cap hit looming in 2026. For Detroit, the appeal is obvious, but so is the risk if Brad Holmes decides to make a move. [Read more 🡒]

Lions Trade Deadline Pressure Is Rising Around One Defensive Decision

With the Nov. 10 trade deadline approaching, the Lions are again being linked to help on defense, and the conversation starts with the same familiar question: how aggressive should they be about fixing the back end of the roster? Cornerback sits near the top of the shopping list, with linebacker and defensive tackle also drawing attention as the team weighs whether to add a proven piece or stand pat and trust its current group.

Sauce Gardner is part of the discussion because of a sharp dip in production with the Colts, while Charvarius Ward has also surfaced as a possible option despite the complications that come with an expiring contract and injury history. Those kinds of names show how wide the range of possibilities is for Detroit, from bigger swings at the position to more restrained moves that fit the long-term picture, and it leaves the Lions facing a deadline decision that could shape how the defense looks down the stretch. Jared Goff Is Forcing His Way Into The MVP Conversation

Jared Goffs latest run has done more than keep the Lions on track, it has pushed his season into a different kind of conversation. After Detroits recent win, he has piled up 150 completions on 223 attempts and posted a passer rating of 112.5, production that has him sitting near the top of the league and drawing fresh attention from around the NFL.

An ESPN feature made the case that Goff belongs in the sleeper MVP discussion, pointing to his strong expected points added as a sign of how efficiently he is driving Detroits offense. He is still not the favorite in that race, but the fact that his name is being mentioned at all says plenty about how steady and valuable his play has been for a Lions team with bigger ambitions.
