Jalen Hurts Just Got Pulled Into A Trade Debate Eagles Fans Will Hate

As the Detroit Lions weigh their options for quarterback replacements, intriguingly unconventional choices like Jalen Hurts and Baker Mayfield could be in the mix if Jared Goff falters by 2026.

The Detroit Lions have enjoyed plenty of stability with Jared Goff under center and Dan Campbell on the sideline, but ESPN’s Dan Graziano floated a pair of eyebrow-raising possibilities if that comfort ever disappears.

In a “long shot” prediction, Graziano connected the Lions to Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield as potential replacements for Goff. The idea hinges on Detroit reaching a breaking point after the 2026 season if things go sideways.

“Frustrated by their inability to cash in on what seemed like a Super Bowl window, the Lions decide to break things up,” Graziano writes. “They move on from Goff and bring in a veteran whose situation elsewhere fell apart, such as Baker Mayfield or Jalen Hurts.”

That kind of move would be a major pivot, and the timing would be aggressive unless Goff were to have a truly rough 2026. Even then, replacing him wouldn’t be simple. The free-agent quarterback pool is expected to be thin, and the Lions may be too competitive to land a top quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft without paying a massive price to move up.

That leaves the trade market, where Detroit would be looking at established veterans if it ever seriously considered moving on from Goff. Graziano’s names fit that mold.

Hurts would give the Lions a quarterback with a winning résumé, elite rushing ability and real big-moment experience. The Eagles, meanwhile, could decide to make a change of their own if 2026 goes badly, just as they moved on from Carson Wentz in 2021.

Mayfield presents a different kind of option. He’s the more polished passer statistically and can still hurt defenses with his legs, but he also comes with more volatility. He may not offer the same security Goff has provided, and his upside in the biggest games may not match Hurts’.

For now, it’s all speculation. But Graziano’s scenario paints an unusual picture: if Detroit ever tears things down at quarterback, the names attached to the job could be far more surprising than anyone expects.

Lions Secondary Question Just Got More Complicated With Joey Porter Jr

Detroits secondary already had enough questions attached to it before Joey Porter Jr. entered the conversation. The Lions are dealing with injuries and uncertainty at cornerback, which has kept that part of the roster under a spotlight as they try to sort out who can be trusted on the outside and how quickly help might be needed.

Porter being considered available as he heads into the final year of his rookie deal only adds another layer to the decision-making. He would fit the kind of high-upside swing a team like Detroit has to at least examine, but the health concerns and contract wrinkle make any pursuit more complicated than a simple talent upgrade. Dan Campbell Took Player Connection Further Than Most Coaches Ever Would

Dan Campbell has built his reputation in Detroit on being the kind of coach who does not just preach toughness, but tries to live it alongside his players. His style has long stood out around the NFL because it is so hands-on and so plainly authentic, from working out with players during camp to putting himself in positions that most head coaches would never consider.

Long before he was guiding the Lions, Campbell was already pushing that connection in unusual ways. As the Miami Dolphins tight ends coach, he once wore pads during practice so he could better understand what his players were dealing with physically, a move that helped shape the way he related to them and even rubbed off on other coaches around the league, including Shawn Jefferson and Mike Vrabel. Lions Still Have One Crucial Return Job To Sort Out

The Lions have most of their return game sorted, but one important job still needs a clearer answer heading into the 2026 season. Special teams coordinator Dave Fipp has identified Tom Kennedy and Greg Dortch as the main candidates to handle punt returns, giving Detroit a two-man competition for a role that can quietly shape field position all year.

Dortch brings the more extensive punt-return background, while Kennedy is expected to be in the mix on kickoffs because of his size and durability. The Lions also have a cluster of options on kickoff duties, including Jacob Saylors, Sione Vaki, Dominic Lovett and rookie Isiah Pacheco, and those decisions could come after the preseason game against the Washington Commanders.
