The Detroit Lions' offense has been a powerhouse in recent seasons, and a significant part of that success comes from the dynamic running back duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. With Gibbs' blazing speed and Montgomery's hard-hitting running style, they've formed a complementary backfield that's tough to stop.
However, as Gibbs' role has expanded, Montgomery's involvement has decreased, putting the veteran at a crossroads. Should he remain a backup, or seek a starting opportunity elsewhere?
ESPN's Aaron Schatz suggests that a fresh start might be beneficial for Montgomery. "As the 2025 season progressed, the Lions' backfield leaned more toward Gibbs, even though Montgomery still saw plenty of action," Schatz noted. "A lead-back role with another team could be advantageous for his career."
Despite being 28, Montgomery remains productive. Over the past two seasons, he's racked up over 700 rushing yards and scored 20 touchdowns-a testament to his capabilities. Yet, he didn't start any games in 2025, a shift from his 14 starts in 2024, as the Lions understandably pivoted towards the younger Gibbs.
Montgomery has been a reliable presence for the Lions, but it might be the right time for both parties to part ways. He still has the talent to be a starting back in the NFL, just not in Detroit.
