The Detroit Lions are entering the offseason with a bit more clarity on their defensive line situation, thanks to some contract details that have emerged. General Manager Brad Holmes recently confirmed that the contracts for defensive linemen Levi Onwuzurike and Josh Paschal have been extended after both missed the 2025 season due to injuries.
Levi Onwuzurike, who had surgery for a torn ACL last spring, spent the year on the reserve/physically unable to perform list. This setback was unexpected for the Lions, especially after they had re-signed him to a one-year deal.
Onwuzurike, a second-round pick back in 2021, has had a tough run with injuries, missing the entire 2022 season due to back surgery. Despite these challenges, he became a key rotational player in 2024, showcasing his versatility by playing both as a big end and a defensive tackle.
Josh Paschal, on the other hand, was sidelined with a back injury. Although he returned to practice for a brief stint in the fall, he never made it off the nonfootball injury list.
This situation leaves the Lions with the option to bring him back on the final year of his rookie contract. Holmes remained cautious when discussing Paschal's future, indicating that more discussions are needed, but his return is still on the table.
Looking ahead, the Lions have some gaps to fill. With only Aidan Hutchinson and Ahmed Hassanein under contract as edge rushers, and Al-Quadin Muhammad and Marcus Davenport set to hit free agency, adding depth will be crucial. Tyrus Wheat's status as a restricted free agent also adds another layer to their offseason plans.
At the defensive tackle position, the Lions have Alim McNeill, Tyleik Williams, Mekhi Wingo, Tyler Lacy, and Chris Smith under contract for 2026. However, DJ Reader and Roy Lopez are pending free agents, which could prompt the Lions to explore options in free agency or the draft to bolster their pass rush.
The Lions' front office will have some important decisions to make as they aim to strengthen their defensive line and build on the potential they glimpsed in 2024. With the right moves, they could be setting themselves up for a formidable presence on defense in the upcoming season.
