Detroit Lions Stun Fans by Signing Former First-Round Pick EDGE Defender

The Detroit Lions have added former first-round pick Payton Turner to their roster, betting on his potential to revitalize their defensive front despite a challenging history with injuries.

The Detroit Lions have made a strategic move by signing free agent edge defender Payton Turner. Turner, originally a first-round pick for the New Orleans Saints back in 2021, was selected 28th overall after showing promise during his college years at Houston. However, his journey in the NFL has been less than smooth, with injuries playing a significant role in his limited appearances-31 games over four years without a single start for the Saints.

Turner's career has been marred by setbacks, starting with a shoulder injury that landed him on injured reserve during his rookie season. The following years weren't kinder, as he missed nearly all of 2023 with a turf toe injury and sat out the entire 2025 season with the Cowboys due to a rib injury.

Despite these challenges, the Lions see potential in Turner. His final season with the Saints saw him play 16 games, recording 21 tackles, 2.0 sacks, four passes defended, and two forced fumbles. While Pro Football Focus graded him at a career-low 54.0 that year, Detroit is banking on his potential upside.

Why the interest from the Lions? For starters, Turner is a cost-effective option.

Last year, he signed a one-year deal for $2.5 million, and with his injury history, the Lions likely secured him for even less. At 6-foot-6 and 270 pounds, Turner possesses the size and athleticism that Detroit covets in their defensive ends.

Plus, at just 27, he fits their mold of young players eager to prove themselves.

In essence, Turner could be a younger version of Marcus Davenport, bringing both potential and a point to prove. He'll be joining forces with DJ Wonnum, another recent addition, as they compete for spots in Detroit's revamped defensive end lineup. With Al-Quadin Muhammad and Tyrus Wheat departing in free agency, and Davenport and Pat O’Connor still unsigned, Turner's arrival is a timely boost for the Lions' defensive strategy.
