Detroit Lions Eye Underrated Center to Strengthen Offensive Line

As the Detroit Lions aim to revamp their offensive line, a seasoned Cardinals center could be the key piece in their overhaul strategy.

The Detroit Lions have a clear mission this offseason: revamp their offensive line. After years of boasting a top-tier unit, the past couple of seasons have seen a dip in performance, particularly in 2025.

The Lions found themselves ranked 31st in pass-block win rate and 20th in run-block win rate, according to ESPN. It's a situation that demands immediate attention.

The transition began with the retirement of Frank Ragnow, which left a void at center. Graham Glasgow stepped in, but the results were less than stellar, making him a prime candidate for replacement. Young guards Tate Ratledge and Christian Mahogany are still finding their footing, and Taylor Decker's performance has been hampered by injuries, raising questions about his future with the team.

At a minimum, Detroit needs to secure a new center or guard. The decision hinges on where they see Ratledge fitting best.

One intriguing possibility is Arizona Cardinals’ interior lineman Hjalte Froholdt. If the Cardinals release him, as Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press suggests is likely, Froholdt could be a perfect fit for the Lions.

Froholdt has been a standout for the Cardinals, ranking 16th in run-blocking and ninth in pass-blocking in 2025, per Pro Football Focus. This contrasts sharply with Glasgow's rankings of 36th and 26th, respectively.

But why would Arizona let Froholdt go? He's entering the final year of his contract and turns 30 in August, which might not align with the Cardinals' long-term strategy.

Despite this, cutting him seems unlikely given his affordable $6.9 million cap hit for 2026. If Arizona does part ways, it will probably be through a trade, as Froholdt’s caliber will attract considerable interest.

For the Lions, trading for Froholdt makes strategic sense. His versatility at both guard and center offers Detroit flexibility in how they manage Ratledge's development. Keeping Ratledge at guard and slotting Froholdt in at center could provide stability and elevate the line's performance.

In short, Froholdt could be the anchor the Lions need to restore their offensive line to its former glory, making him a valuable target this offseason.
