Derrick Moore Just Added Real Heat To A Lions Battle

After overcoming an early setback, Derrick Moore has made a triumphant return to the Lions' training camp, injecting new energy into an already promising rookie class.

Detroit Lions rookie Derrick Moore is back in the mix, and the pass rusher wasted no time reminding everyone why there was buzz around him in the first place.

Moore had been slowed early in training camp by an injury, which put his development on hold and kept him out of the Lions’ first preseason game. But since returning after that opener, he’s started stacking positive days again. A multi-sack showing, plus a rep where he beat rookie tackle Blake Miller for a sack on Jared Goff, helped reignite the conversation around him after the injury had cooled it off a bit.

That excitement was on full display from one of his teammates, fellow rookie defensive lineman Skyler Gill-Howard.

"Big 8 is back! Tell them you’re back, D-Mo!

He had like 20 sacks today! My goodness!

He’s fast!," exclaimed Gill-Howard during a media scrum for Moore.

Moore’s return also gives a clearer picture of Detroit’s rookie class as a whole in camp. Early on, the group looks like it’s coming along well, especially with more reps and some preseason live action helping sort things out.

Miller, Gill-Howard, and Keith Abney II appear to be the biggest beneficiaries of those preseason snaps. Gill-Howard, in particular, has picked up more pass-rushing work in camp after the way he performed in game action.

Miller also turned in the best run-blocking rate of any rookie lineman in Week 1 of the preseason, which lines up with the Lions’ decision to target the most “pro ready” tackle in a tackle-heavy class.

On the defensive side, Detroit’s pass rush room is starting to take shape, too. Ahmed Hassanein has made a strong entrance this offseason after missing his entire rookie year because of an injury, and he looks on track to make the roster unless something changes in camp or preseason. Moore’s emergence only adds more pressure to the Lions’ open starting spot on the edge.

D.J. Wonnum hasn’t drawn a ton of attention in camp, but he sits at the top of Detroit’s unofficial depth chart heading into Week 2 of the preseason. That means the job may be there to lose, with Moore and even Hassanein pushing to change the picture.

The bigger takeaway is that Detroit’s defensive line has looked lively in camp. That might not mean everything, especially with the offensive line dealing with some moving parts right now, but the current group around Aidan Hutchinson looks like the best one he’s had in his career.

Sam LaPorta Issue Suddenly Puts Detroits Week 1 Focus On Edge

A late-summer health check has nudged the Lions focus a little more toward the margins as Week 1 approaches, with Sam LaPorta now dealing with a hip injury. Dan Campbell made clear the issue is not viewed as overly serious, and the team is taking the cautious route by keeping its top tight end on the shelf for now while the opener draws closer.

Campbell sounded confident about LaPortas long-term outlook, but there is still some uncertainty around how quickly this settles down. The bigger question for Detroit is simply whether the injury fades in time to stay out of the regular-season conversation, or whether it hangs around long enough to complicate the early part of the schedule. Lions Face One Roster Battle Fans Should Watch Closely

As the roster cutdown date nears, the Lions still have one of their clearest training camp decisions sitting in the middle of a crowded linebacker room. The top four appear set, but there is still real competition for the remaining spots, with a mix of veterans and rookies trying to make their case while injuries have complicated the evaluation process.

Special teams coordinator Dave Fipp has been part of that conversation, too, underscoring both the upside and the risk in sorting out the group. With so many linebackers still fighting for an edge and special teams value likely to matter in the final call, Detroit has one of those late-summer roster battles worth watching closely. Lions Suddenly Face Another Frustrating Question In Their Secondary

The Lions were already trying to sort out their secondary, and Ennis Rakestraws latest setback only adds to the uncertainty. The young cornerback left practice on Aug. 20 to be evaluated for a lower leg injury on a non-contact play, interrupting what had been an important summer for him as he worked to establish himself in Detroits defensive backfield.

Rakestraw entered camp in a battle for the No. 2 cornerback job, a role that could have given the Lions a clearer answer behind their top options. Instead, the injury reopens familiar questions about availability for a player whose first two NFL seasons have already been slowed by injuries, and it leaves Detroit waiting on another piece of a secondary that still wants to settle into place.
