D.J. Wonnum Joins Detroit Lions in Intriguing One-Year Deal

Detroit Lions bolster defensive line by signing experienced end D.J. Wonnum, aiming to enhance their pass-rush alongside Aidan Hutchinson.

The Detroit Lions have made a strategic move to bolster their defense by signing D.J. Wonnum, a seasoned defensive end, to a one-year deal reportedly worth up to $6 million. This signing addresses a key need for the Lions, who have been on the lookout for a strong presence on the edge to complement Aidan Hutchinson.

Wonnum, at 6-foot-5 and 258 pounds, brings the kind of physicality and experience the Lions crave. After showcasing his talents with the Carolina Panthers for the past two seasons and starting his career with the Minnesota Vikings, Wonnum has consistently played over half of his team's defensive snaps each year. This durability and experience make him a valuable addition to Detroit's defensive line.

Before securing Wonnum, the Lions had focused their free agency efforts on strengthening their offensive line and secondary. However, the need for a defensive end was evident, especially with only Hutchinson and second-year player Ahmed Hassanein, who didn’t see action as a rookie, on the roster. The versatility of linemen like Levi Onwuzurike and Tyler Lacy, who can shift between tackle and end, adds depth but doesn't replace the need for a specialized edge rusher.

The Lions felt the sting of losing Al-Quadin Muhammad to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after his impressive 11-sack season. Additionally, Marcus Davenport, a key player in seven starts last season, is still navigating free agency.

Wonnum, a fourth-round pick from South Carolina in 2020, hit a career peak with eight sacks for the Vikings in 2023, contributing to his total of 30 sacks over six seasons. His addition to the Lions is a calculated step towards fortifying their defense, aiming to create a formidable duo with Hutchinson that could trouble opposing offenses throughout the season.
