Brian Branch Return Timeline Just Got A Lot More Interesting

Brian Branch's return to the Lions lineup could be imminent after head coach Dan Campbell's recent optimistic update on his recovery progress.

Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch is edging closer to a return, and Dan Campbell didn’t sound like a coach preparing anyone for a long wait.

Before Friday’s practice at the Allen Park Performance Center, Campbell gave a strong update on the former second-round pick, who has spent the offseason working back from the torn Achilles he suffered last season against the Dallas Cowboys.

“He's close. Yep.

He's close. He's ready to go.

I'm tired of listening to him, alright," said Campbell. "So, I mean that in a good way.

Man, he's put in a ton of work and he looks really good. He's close.”

Branch has been around the facility much more over the last couple of weeks, but his 2026 NFL regular season started on the Physically Unable to Perform list, which keeps him out this week against the Carolina Panthers.

The next possible opening comes in Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals on the road, though Detroit has typically handled returning players carefully. The Lions also have a bye week after that game, which makes the first realistic chance for Branch to get back on the field against the Green Bay Packers.

Branch is expected to be a candidate to return to practice next week and begin his 21-day window. Once that window opens, Detroit can activate him at any point and move him onto the 53-man roster.

While Branch’s return is still being staged, defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard is focused on building off what the unit showed against the Jets in Week 4.

"Needless to say, a lot of improvement, a lot of bright spots in that game. I thought we affected the quarterback well, left with five sacks and we left some meat on the bone there.

I think it was another two out there that we should have had," said Sheppard. "But overall, all in all improvement, a lot of things on the uptick right now.

"A lot of guys building, growing confidence, earning more playing time in certain spots, earning more roles in certain spots. So, excited to see us go out on primetime this week and put out even better performance.”

Dan Campbell Hinted At Big Lions Roster Decisions Before Carolina

With a short week leading into Carolina, Dan Campbell spent part of his pregame update signaling that the Lions still have some roster chess to play. Detroit is in trade talks for Joey Porter Jr., while safety Brian Branch is nearing a return to practice, and Campbell also made clear that he remains confident in linebacker Jack Campbell even after a slow start to the season. The message was less about the headlines than the direction: the Lions are still sorting out how their defense wants to look as the schedule tightens.

The immediate assignment, though, is straightforward enough. Detroit is focused on keeping Bryce Young from settling in, and Campbell said the biggest defensive concern beyond that is handling tight ends in the middle of the field. He also raised the possibility of rookie linebacker Jimmy Rolder getting defensive snaps, a reminder that the Lions may not be done adjusting the group as they balance short-term needs with longer-term decisions. Lions Could Have Tough Trade Calls If Young Talent Keeps Rising

The Lions are heading toward the trade deadline in an unusual spot for a team still trying to build something lasting: they are expected to be buyers, but they also have to keep sorting through which veterans and depth pieces fit the roster long term. As Detroit evaluates its options, cornerback Amani Oruwariye, defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike and offensive lineman Logan Stenberg have surfaced as names to watch, especially if the front office decides a roster spot or draft asset can be better used elsewhere.

What makes the calculus trickier is that the answer may not be about those players alone. The Lions also have to factor in how younger talent is coming along and whether injuries create new pressure points before the deadline arrives. If those developments keep breaking the right way, Detroit could find itself making some difficult calls on useful pieces rather than simply adding help. [Read more 🡒]

Jared Goff Is About To Pass A Hall Of Fame Name

Jared Goff is on the verge of a notable climb up the NFLs all-time regular season passing yards list, with a chance to move past Joe Montana in Week 4 against the Carolina Panthers. Goff enters the week at 25th with 40,424 yards, sitting just behind Montanas 40,551, another reminder of how far his career has come as hes settled in as the steady face of Detroits offense.

For Goff, the moment is more than a passing-game milestone, because it speaks to the consistency and durability that have defined his run. He has talked about the preparation behind that stability, and now the Lions are watching a quarterback who keeps stacking productive seasons move into territory once occupied by one of the sports biggest names.
