With the Nov. 10 trade deadline closing in, the Detroit Lions are being linked to the kind of move that would go straight at the soft spot in their defense: cornerback.
JP Acosta of CBS Sports laid out a list of deadline possibilities for every NFL team, splitting them into “pipe dream” swings and more realistic targets. For Detroit, the position he circled was no surprise. The Lions have been searching for help in the secondary, and Acosta made it clear why that area stands out.
“If you’re reading this, the Lions still might need you to play cornerback,” he says. “Their secondary has been the weakest part of the defense this season by a massive amount.”
In Acosta’s view, the dream option is Charvarius Ward of the Indianapolis Colts. The more attainable name is Amik Robertson of the Washington Commanders. He also pointed to the return of S Brian Branch and noted that S Kerby Joseph has returned to practice, but said the Lions could still use more help at corner because injuries and uneven play have left the room in rough shape.
“Even though they got S Brian Branch back (and S Kerby Joseph has returned to practice), adding more cornerbacks to a room devastated by injury and poor play could help this defensive line transform from being very bad to at least passable for a playoff team.”
Detroit general manager Brad Holmes has not been known for making splashy in-season trades, but this is the kind of situation that could force his hand.

Lions Could Get A Needed Linebacker Boost Sooner Than Expected
The Lions have been piecing together their linebacker room for weeks, reshuffling the lineup and leaning on the practice squad after a string of injuries hit the position. Devin Whites arrival was supposed to add speed and stability to that group, and even though his setback came early, there is at least some reason for optimism as he works his way back.
White broke his right forearm in Week 5 and has been rehabbing since then, but he now has updated imaging on the horizon and has said he feels good about where things stand. For a defense that has had to keep adjusting on the fly, the possibility of getting him back sooner rather than later would be a welcome boost, even if the final timeline is still being sorted out. Lions Trade Deadline Debate Centers On One Move Brad Holmes Must Avoid
The Lions have kept winning often enough to stay in the playoff mix, but the roster still has a few soft spots that show up when the games tighten. The secondary has been the clearest concern, and even with the teams success, the defensive depth has not looked sturdy enough to ignore as the trade deadline approaches.
ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell framed the situation the way plenty of observers have, pointing to defensive line, linebacker and cornerback as the biggest needs if Detroit wants to make a real push. The question for Brad Holmes is not whether there is room to improve, but how aggressive to get, since one bold move could help the Lions now while a misstep could cost them later. [Read more 🡒]
Lions Face A Tough Reality In Miami Despite Their Winning Streak
The Lions head into Week 9 riding a three-game winning streak, but the trip to Miami comes with a less comfortable backdrop than the record suggests. Detroit has kept stacking wins, yet the defensive side of the roster is still being tested by injuries to several key players, leaving the team with some real uncertainty as it prepares for a Dolphins offense that can force opponents to chase points.
The matchup has also drawn attention in the betting market, where the total has climbed even as the spread has stayed put, a sign that oddsmakers expect a competitive game with scoring chances on both sides. For Detroit, the bigger question is whether the defense can hold up well enough to let the winning streak survive a road setting that already looks like one of the tougher assignments on the schedule.
