Ben Johnson Stuns Fans With Bold Praise for Lions' Drew Petzing

Ben Johnson's confidence in Drew Petzing suggests a promising future for the Lions' offense amidst critical lineup challenges.

The Detroit Lions are back in search mode for a new offensive coordinator after the departure of Ben Johnson, who left in 2025 to lead the Chicago Bears. Johnson’s impact in Chicago was immediate, guiding the team to a division title and a playoff victory in his debut season.

In Detroit, however, Johnson's successor, John Morton, struggled to find his footing. Morton lost his play-calling responsibilities mid-season and ultimately wasn't retained. Now, the Lions have tapped Drew Petzing, formerly of the Arizona Cardinals, to steer their offensive ship, despite his less-than-stellar track record in Arizona.

Ben Johnson, speaking about Petzing, expressed strong confidence in his friend’s abilities. “He’s a dear friend of mine, and I know he’s gonna knock it out of the park there in Detroit.

Very happy for him and that opportunity. …I think they’re in good hands,” Johnson shared.

Johnson left big shoes to fill, having orchestrated a high-powered offense during his tenure with the Lions. Petzing inherits a unit brimming with talent, but with that comes sky-high expectations.

One of the challenges Petzing will face in 2026 is the uncertainty surrounding the offensive line, a problem Morton also encountered. Unlike Johnson, who benefited from a stable and elite line, Petzing must navigate potential changes. Left tackle Taylor Decker and center Graham Glasgow, who stepped in after Frank Ragnow’s retirement, are both candidates for release.

The Lions’ decisions at these positions will be crucial. Integrating new linemen into the offense will certainly test Petzing’s adaptability and strategy, setting the stage for an intriguing season in Detroit.
