A trip back to Ford Field carries extra weight for Aaron Glenn this Sunday, but the New York Jets are bringing more than just a familiar face.
Glenn, now the Jets’ head coach, spent 2021 through 2024 as the Detroit Lions’ defensive coordinator and was one of the foundational pieces of Dan Campbell’s run with the franchise. The Lions and Jets will meet in Week 3 with both teams looking to move to 2-1, and Glenn’s return adds another layer to a game that already looks like a serious test for Detroit.
Campbell and Glenn go way back. Their connection started when they were teammates with the Dallas Cowboys in 2005, and later carried into the coaching world when they were on the New Orleans Saints staff together from 2016-20. When Campbell took over in Detroit in 2021, he brought Glenn with him.
"He told me if he got [a head coaching job], he wanted me to be his coordinator, and I will always remember that," Glenn said of Campbell. "That friendship will always last."
The matchup also puts Glenn’s defensive fingerprints under the spotlight again. In his final season as Lions defensive coordinator, Detroit used man coverage more than any other team in the league at 44.2 percent, and the Lions were also among the NFL’s leaders in base personnel. The style has shifted some since he moved on to New York, but Campbell still sees a tough, aggressive defense.
“All we know is two games worth of what they've shown, what they do,” Campbell said. “But I know enough to know that AG's got a rolodex of looks now, and pressures, he's got it all, and coverage disguises. So we’ve kind of got to be prepared for everything.”
Detroit’s defense will also have to deal with a quarterback who has already caused problems at Ford Field. Geno Smith has played three games in Detroit as a Seattle Seahawk and has totaled 1,043 passing yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions in those games.
The Jets bring more familiar faces into the mix, too. Lions cornerback D.J.
Reed and tight end Tyler Conklin are facing their former teams, while former Lion Tim Patrick is with New York but on injured reserve. Glenn’s staff also includes former Lions coaches Seth Ryan and Steve Heiden.
Campbell didn’t downplay what the Jets can bring, either. He said their defense has more talent than last year’s version and still plays with the kind of edge Glenn is known for.
The Lions are trying to get their own defense right, and Campbell made it clear he expects a fight against the coach who helped shape it.
“Our players know exactly what's coming in here because [Glenn] was here for [four] years,” Campbell said. “And turn on the tape, and look what just happened last Thursday night.”
He wasn’t interested in softening the tone around the matchup.
“This is not going to be a trap game,” Campbell said. “This is going to be a knockout, 60-minute brawl. It's going to go down.”
