The Nuggets have spent the last several seasons collecting team success and individual hardware, but the trophy case has been pretty much all about Nikola Jokic. Denver has won 50-plus games in four straight seasons and capped that run with the 2023 title, while Jokic has piled up three NBA MVP awards. Even so, the franchise has not had a major award winner beyond Jokic since Marcus Camby took Defensive Player of the Year in 2006-07.
So where could Denver actually make noise in the major awards race this season? Using FanDuel Sportsbook odds, the answer starts with the obvious name and then gets more interesting from there.
Jokic is still in the MVP conversation, of course. He has won the award three times in the past six seasons and finished second in the other three.
But right now, he is projected to land outside the top two. Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs is the favorite at +200, followed by Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander at +350.

Denver’s path to Defensive Player of the Year looks much thinner. Aaron Gordon and Jokic are both long shots, and the Nuggets as a team are not built around defense. The best theoretical option would be Alpha Diallo, who won EuroLeague Best Defender last season, but his role in Denver is not expected to be large enough to make him a real contender.
The cleanest award angle for the Nuggets is Sixth Man of the Year. Tim Hardaway Jr. came close last season, finishing third in the voting, and now DeRozan enters as a player who could absolutely end up among the finalists.
He would be the oldest 6MOY winner in NBA history if he took it, but the scoring and playmaking should keep him in the mix. The current favorites are Ajay Mitchell of the Thunder at +500 and Dylan Harper of the Spurs at +700, with Anfernee Simons and Ayo Dosunmu both ranked ahead of DeRozan.
If Denver gets a breakout season from Julian Strawther, the Nuggets could have another award name to watch. With Hardaway Jr. gone, Strawther should have more chances than he has ever had after three seasons with an inconsistent role. Last year, he averaged 7.2 points in 15.1 minutes per game, and a jump to around 15 points per game with efficient shooting would at least put him in the Most Improved Player conversation.
There is also a rookie worth keeping an eye on, even if Denver does not currently list one as a Rookie of the Year candidate. That player is Trevon Brazile, the 35th-overall pick and the only rookie on a standard contract for the Nuggets this season. He may have a tough time getting on the floor early, though, because he could be buried on the depth chart.

Nuggets Have A Chance On A Former Lottery Pick Few Saw Coming
Atlantas roster squeeze created an opening for Devin Carter, and now Denver has at least a theoretical path to add a former lottery pick who drew interest for his defensive profile. Carter was waived by the Hawks because of roster constraints, and the next step is simple but important: he has to clear waivers before any team can move on him.
If he gets through that process, the Nuggets are positioned to take a hard look. Denver has both a 15th roster spot and a two-way spot open, which gives the front office some flexibility if it wants to add another guard-defender into the mix. The issue came later, when the playoff version of Murray never quite matched the regular-season load, leaving the Nuggets looking for a way to ease some of that pressure without shrinking his importance to what they do.
Enter DeMar DeRozan, whose arrival gives Denver another steady source of offense and a different way to bend defenses. With his ability to score in one-on-one situations and make plays for others, DeRozan can take some of the creation burden off Murray and give the Nuggets a more varied attack, which is exactly the kind of help a contender needs when the game gets tighter and the possessions get harder.
