The Denver Nuggets open their 2026-27 regular season on Thursday night with one odd little subplot hanging over the injury report: Spencer Jones could miss the game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the very team that tried to pry him away this offseason.
Denver listed Jones as questionable with bilateral hamstring injury management ahead of the 6:30 p.m. PT tip on ESPN in Oklahoma City. That comes after the Nuggets matched the Thunder’s two-year, $12 million offer sheet for the forward in restricted free agency, keeping him in Denver instead of sending him to Oklahoma City.
The result is a possible absence for Jones in a game against the same franchise that went after him in the summer.
The Nuggets will also be missing Julian Strawther, who was ruled out with a left knee sprain.
Oklahoma City has its own injury issues, though the Thunder are coming in with some momentum after a 116-104 road win over the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night. They’ll be without Otega Oweh, who is still recovering from right Achilles tendon repair surgery, Thomas Sorber, who remains sidelined after right knee surgery, and Nikola Topic, who is unavailable following lower back surgery.
The Thunder are trying to move to 2-0, while Denver gets its first chance to start building something in a season that begins on the road against a Western Conference opponent led by three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic.
Jones’ status adds a strange twist to the opener. After Oklahoma City’s failed effort to sign him this offseason, his availability is now one of the main things to watch before tipoff.

Nuggets Opener Will Put Denvers Shaky New Rotation Under Pressure
The Nuggets are heading into their 2026-27 opener in Oklahoma City with more questions than usual around the back end of the roster, and the timing could not be trickier. Denver has spent the offseason reworking pieces around its core, losing Peyton Watson, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Bruce Brown while adding DeMar DeRozan, a veteran scorer who figures to give the second unit a different look as the group settles in.
David Adelman has already signaled that the rotation is still a work in progress, which means the first few games may be as much about sorting roles as chasing a clean result. Denver will need those answers quickly against the Thunder, because early-season experimentation is one thing on paper and another when the opponent is sharp enough to expose every shaky minute. Nuggets May Not Be Done Addressing A Backup Guard Problem
The Nuggets search for help behind Jamal Murray may not be over yet. NBA insider Jake Fischer reported that Denver had interest in Kevin Porter Jr. before Milwaukee waived him, a sign the team is still keeping an eye on ways to upgrade a backup guard spot that has been a point of discussion around the roster. Porter has long been viewed as a player who could give Denver more punch offensively than Tyus Jones in that reserve role.
Finding a path to him is another matter. Denvers salary-cap situation leaves little room for maneuver, and bringing Porter in now would require the front office to navigate a crowded roster picture while also managing the financial consequences of a move. The Nuggets can keep looking, but any attempt to add another guard would come with real complications attached. [Read more 🡒]
Nuggets Already Face A Rotation Concern After Ugly Opening Loss
The Nuggets left their season opener with more than just a loss to sort through. Denver fell to the Thunder 96-84, and the offense never found much rhythm in a game that quickly turned messy, with 22 turnovers feeding 21 Oklahoma City points. For a team that expected to lean on its top-end talent and stable rotation, the night turned into an early reminder of how thin the margin can be when the execution slips.
Cam Johnson also left with an ankle injury and did not return, adding another layer of concern to a debut that already felt out of sync. Denver had enough issues across the board without losing another piece, and the timing is especially tricky with the season just getting started. The bigger question now is how the Nuggets will piece together their rotation if the opening night setbacks linger beyond one rough result. [Read more 🡒]
