Nuggets May Already Have A Peyton Watson Backup Plan

The Denver Nuggets' interest in veteran DeMar DeRozan presents a strategic alternative to enhance their roster should Peyton Watson be traded.

The Denver Nuggets may already be lining up a fallback plan if Peyton Watson moves on, and DeMar DeRozan has surfaced as a name worth watching.

Watson has been the subject of sign-and-trade discussion for weeks, and one of the teams tied to him, the Cleveland Cavaliers, has already taken the first step toward creating the cap room they’d need to bring him in, if that ends up being the route they take. That gives Denver a natural opening to start thinking about what comes next for the 2026-27 season, and DeRozan fits the bill as a veteran alternative.

NBA insider Marc Stein reported in the latest edition of The Stein Line that the Nuggets are among the teams interested in the 37-year-old, 17-year veteran. Stein wrote: "The Wizards, meanwhile, shifted their intent to sign another veteran this offseason by showing some interest in DeMar DeRozan, pursuing the former All-Star swingman along with teams such as Miami and Denver," Stein said.

If Watson does get dealt, DeRozan would make a lot of sense as the next man up. He’d almost certainly have to take the veteran minimum, and a reserve role would be new territory for him after a career spent mostly in the starting five.

But at this stage, that’s likely the reality he’d face no matter where he lands. In Denver, he could step into the kind of sixth-man job the Nuggets would need after the departure of Tim Hardaway Jr.

The fit is obvious on the offensive end. DeRozan’s defense would be a step down from Watson’s, but his scoring touch is still very much intact. Last season with the Sacramento Kings, the six-time All-Star averaged 18.4 points while shooting 49.7% from the floor.

It was the first time in 13 years that DeRozan finished below 20 points per game, but the mid-range game is still as polished as ever. Put him next to Nikola Jokic, and there’s a real path for him to work as a slasher and finisher around the rim. His basketball IQ also stands out, and that kind of feel should pair well with Jokic’s game.

The biggest adjustment would be accepting life off the bench. DeRozan has started every game he has played outside of 12 contests in his rookie year, so the role would be unfamiliar. Still, his experience and smarts suggest he could handle it if that’s the opportunity in front of him.

For Denver, the appeal is simple: if Watson is traded, DeRozan may be the best veteran option left.

Nuggets Cant Waste Whats At Stake With Nikola Jokic Now

The Nuggets are heading into another pivotal offseason with the same big-picture reality hanging over everything: Nikola Jokic is still the centerpiece, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon remain core pieces, and yet this group has not gotten back past the Western Conference Finals in recent playoff runs. Even as Denver looks ahead to the 2026-27 season, the franchise has to balance continuity with the pressure that comes from knowing its championship window is not something to take for granted.

Peyton Watsons restricted free agency adds another layer of uncertainty, but the larger issue is whether the Nuggets can keep pace in a Western Conference that keeps getting deeper around them. Fans and analysts can see the challenge plainly enough. Denver still has the kind of top-end talent every contender would want, but the margin for error is shrinking, and what happens next with Jokic will shape how long this run can realistically last. Nuggets Fans Will Notice One Unusual Twist In Denver's Preseason

The Nuggets 2026 schedule dropped with the usual reminders of the long haul ahead, from an 82-game regular season stretching from October to April to a four-game preseason that will give Denver an early look at where it stands. For most fans, the familiar rhythm is intact, but one preseason date already stands out for being a little different from the normal Ball Arena routine.

On Oct. 4, Denver will meet the Jazz at the CU Events Center in Boulder, a neutral-site setting that shifts the exhibition closer to a college atmosphere than a pro one. The Nuggets also have another preseason matchup with Utah in Salt Lake City, and their schedule includes a neutral-site regular season game in Mexico City against the Pacers, adding a few unusual stops to a year that otherwise looks like a standard NBA grind. Nuggets Fans Wont Love Why The Lakers Keep Coming Up In Jokic Talk

Austin Reaves new deal with the Lakers is notable on its own, a four-year, $180 million contract that makes him the highest-paid undrafted player in NBA history. It also adds another layer to Los Angeles long-running habit of hovering around every major star conversation, which is why the Lakers keep surfacing in the background whenever people start thinking about the next heavyweight shift in the league.

For Denver fans, the uncomfortable part is less about Reaves than about how quickly the chatter drifts toward Nikola Jokic. The Nuggets center has declined an extension and could be headed toward free agency in 2027, which is enough to send rival speculation spinning in all directions. Los Angeles has already been mentioned as a possible landing spot, and with the Lakers always willing to keep their options open, the talk around Jokic figures to linger well past this latest contract headline.
