Nuggets Forward Logjam Is About To Create A Tough Rotation Call

As Spencer Jones makes his much-anticipated return, the Denver Nuggets face complex rotation decisions that could redefine their strategy against the Indiana Pacers.

Spencer Jones is back on the Denver Nuggets’ radar, and his return could force some uncomfortable decisions in the rotation.

Jones has been removed from the injury report and is expected to play Saturday afternoon against the Indiana Pacers in Mexico City. Bennett Durando of the Denver Post reported that Denver and Jones had been aiming for that game as the target date after an extended recovery from a hamstring strain.

Spencer Jones and the Nuggets have been targeting tomorrow’s game in Mexico City for his return throughout this week, per source. He’s not listed on the injury report.

Denver should welcome Jones back with open arms. He brings defense, three-point spacing, and a steadier presence to the group.

The tricky part is figuring out where he fits now that Trevon Brazile and Bryce Hopkins have both played well while Jones has been out. That’s the real puzzle for the Nuggets heading into Saturday.

If the starters handle their usual responsibilities and DeMar DeRozan is available after missing last Wednesday’s game with back spasms, Denver may not have room for all three forwards at once. The Nuggets could stretch into an 11-man rotation to make it work, or they could trim one of those pieces from the mix.

One possible setup has Hopkins being the odd man out in a 10-man rotation, with Cam Johnson staggered into second-unit minutes. In that version, Brazile would check in first and log extended time alongside Jokic before leaving the floor during stretches without Jokic. DeRozan would then slide to backup shooting guard, while Johnson and Jones fill the forward spots and help keep the floor spaced.

That arrangement would leave Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray on their usual heavy workloads, with Marvin Bagley III backing up center and Tyus Jones handling reserve point guard duties. Those minutes would stay mostly intact.

For Jones’ first game back, a 14-minute role feels like the starting point. That number could climb if he looks sharp right away, and it would not be surprising if some of those minutes come at Brazile’s expense. The Nuggets may not love the squeeze, but the staff clearly trusts Jones and wants him back on the floor so he can work his way back toward last season’s level.

Of course, none of this is locked in. Denver could go with an all-bench unit, or it could use 11 players and spread the minutes even thinner. However it shakes out, the Nuggets are probably going to have to make some tough calls with the second unit, and there may be some short-term growing pains while they sort it out.

Nuggets May Face An Early Roster Choice They Didnt Expect

The Nuggets are only a week into the season, but their roster math is already creating a problem they probably did not expect to face this soon. Because of salary-cap constraints, Denver is carrying just 14 standard contracts and leaning on two-way players to fill out the group, a setup that comes with a built-in limit on how often those players can be used.

That limit is starting to matter. Denver has already used 16 of the 90 combined two-way appearances available, which has pushed the front office to weigh a promotion sooner than planned. Bryce Hopkins has emerged as the leading candidate for that move based on his performance, with Ryan Nembhard also in the mix, while Cam Whitmore looks less likely to be the one elevated. Pacers Get A Potential Boost Before Jokic Test In Mexico City

The Nuggets trip to Mexico City comes with the usual international-game wrinkles, and this one arrives with Indiana trying to get healthier in time for a tough test against Nikola Jokic and company. The Pacers are already carrying three players on the injury report as officially ruled out, which makes every upgrade matter a little more as they prepare for the altitude and the different rhythm that comes with playing outside the usual NBA routine.

Indiana did get a bit of encouraging news before tipoff, with two rotation pieces moving closer to availability after recent absences. One of them is expected to be back in game action, while the other was also bumped up on the report after missing the last two games, giving the Pacers a better chance to have some backcourt and wing stability for a matchup that already asks plenty of any opponent. Aaron Gordon Gave Nuggets Fans A Mexico City Moment To Love

The Nuggets left Mexico City with a win over Indiana, but the night also carried the kind of atmosphere that makes an overseas game feel bigger than the standings. Denver got important production from Cam Johnson, Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray in the 114-102 victory, while Pascal Siakam paced the Pacers, and the setting gave the matchup a different pulse than a typical regular-season stop.

Before tipoff, one of the more memorable touches came when Aaron Gordon helped greet the crowd in Spanish, a small gesture that played well in a building full of energy. It was the sort of moment that can stick with fans long after the final horn, especially with both teams now moving on to games in Texas and leaving the Mexico City stage behind. [Read more 🡒]
