Peyton Watson’s next move is suddenly one of the more interesting free-agent storylines still hanging out there.
The Denver Nuggets wing is a restricted free agent, and while he’s chasing his first real payday, the talks haven’t exactly moved smoothly. Denver doesn’t have much room to meet the number Watson wants, but it also doesn’t want to lose him for nothing. That has left both sides stuck in a tense negotiation.
Watson’s breakout season last year put him in position to ask for more, and he’s looking to keep climbing. But according to NBA reporter Evan Sidery, the Nuggets haven’t budged much from their range.
“The Nuggets' offer for Peyton Watson remains in the $16-18 million per year range, per The Stein Line. Denver and Watson’s representatives, Klutch Sports, are dug in on their value. If Denver doesn't want to cooperate on a sign-and-trade, Watson could take the qualifying offer," NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.
That qualifying offer has become a real possibility if the Nuggets keep holding the line and a trade doesn’t come together.
“The top restricted free agents - Jalen Duren, Peyton Watson and Bennedict Mathurin - are now all considering taking their qualifying offers to become unrestricted in 2027. As negotiations stall out across the board, these three could become trendsetters against the RFA process,” Sidery posted.
If Watson does end up available in a more flexible way, Cleveland has already emerged as a serious player. The Cavaliers have spent the last week pushing hard for the NBA champion, and ESPN’s Dave McMenamin said they’re very much in the mix.
“I’m told that they [Cavs] are a ‘serious’ candidate to land Peyton Watson. There are other teams interested in Watson as well, but they are a serious candidate,” ESPN’s Dave McMenamin said.
Cleveland has been hunting for a starting wing and spent much of the summer on Jonathan Kuminga before shifting its focus. Watson now looks like the target, and the Cavaliers are being aggressive in their pursuit.
The 23-year-old has made $11 million over his young career, and a sign-and-trade would give Cleveland a clean path to add him. For the Cavs, Watson would bring another two-way wing into the fold, the kind of piece that can tighten up a roster already trying to build toward real contention in the Eastern Conference.
