In a recent conversation with Marc Stein, veteran small forward Khris Middleton is weighing his options as the Sunday deadline approaches for being waived and remaining eligible for postseason play with another team. Middleton is contemplating whether to continue with the Mavericks for the rest of the season or negotiate a buyout with Dallas to join a playoff contender. The Nuggets have shown interest in the 34-year-old, according to league insiders.
Middleton expressed gratitude for the warm reception he's received in Dallas. The Mavericks have left the decision in Middleton's hands, indicating they would be pleased to keep him if he chooses to stay.
Reports from Bennett Durando of The Denver Post reveal that Denver is keen on Middleton, and they've also shown interest in Kyle Anderson, who is set to join the Timberwolves after his buyout with Memphis. The Nuggets are on the lookout for wing size and additional ball-handling capabilities.
Though Middleton has faced injuries in recent years and isn't quite the All-Star he was from 2019-22, he's been solid since joining Dallas in the Anthony Davis trade. Over 39 games this season, he's averaged 10.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in just over 24 minutes per game, shooting .441/.336/.851.
If Middleton opts for a buyout, he wouldn't be able to sign with Cleveland, Golden State, or New York due to salary cap restrictions related to his $33.3 million expiring contract. Additionally, agreeing to a buyout would mean forfeiting his Bird rights, which could impact his financial prospects this summer. Retaining those rights might help him avoid settling for a veteran’s minimum deal.
