The Denver Nuggets' season has been a wild ride, to say the least. With 17 games left, they're clinging to the sixth and final locked-in playoff spot.
It's been a season filled with ups and downs, or as Bill Simmons aptly described it on his podcast, a "mini-hell." Nuggets fans can certainly relate to that sentiment.
The team just can't seem to catch a break that leads to sustained momentum. It's been a classic case of one step forward, two steps back. Zach Lowe captured the vibe perfectly, dubbing it "the it’s not our year, year."
When Lowe asked Simmons about his concern for the Nuggets, Simmons suggested, "Hey, Denver, just fall to sixth and get everybody healthy." And that's exactly where they find themselves, with the exception of Peyton Watson. Now, the focus is on maintaining health and holding onto that sixth spot.
Simmons pointed out that whether the Nuggets finish between third and sixth might not be crucial, given their road success this season. But the key is to "just get healthy," a challenge they've faced all year. The good news is, health might finally be within reach.
Aaron Gordon made his return against the Knicks after a 17-game absence due to a hamstring injury, only for Jamal Murray to twist his ankle in the same game. Fortunately, Murray bounced back quickly, playing in the next game-a heartbreaking last-second loss to the Thunder. At least no new injuries cropped up in that one.
Staying in sixth is vital to avoid the play-in tournament, a scenario that could spell disaster if they slip to seventh. It's a nightmare that no one saw coming at the start of the season.
Simmons and Lowe's insights resonate with the reality Nuggets fans are living. Injuries, inconsistent play, clutch-time struggles, and Nikola Jokic's wrist issues have made this season feel like a bad dream at times.
To top it off, the Nuggets face the toughest remaining schedule in the league. It’s a fitting challenge for a season that’s already been a roller coaster. But if they can navigate these final games and stay healthy, the Nuggets might just find a way to turn this turbulent season into something special.
