Peyton Watson's journey back from a hamstring injury is a day-to-day saga for the Denver Nuggets, with head coach David Adelman emphasizing caution as they navigate his recovery. Despite hopes for a quicker return, Adelman shared that Watson's comeback is still uncertain.
“I have no idea,” Adelman mentioned during practice, underscoring the unpredictability of the situation. “Hopefully within the week,” he added, reflecting a sentiment shared weeks ago.
The focus remains on Watson's response to the rigors of rehab, as assessed by the medical team.
Watson is actively engaging in 3-on-3 sessions and conditioning drills under the watchful eye of strength and performance coach Felipe Eichenberger. Yet, Adelman remains hesitant to pinpoint an exact return date.
“It’s a process, it’s day to day,” he reiterated, echoing the frustrations of a season marred by injuries. “I feel bad - I say the same thing all the time,” he admitted, expressing empathy for Watson and his teammates who have faced similar setbacks.
The injury bug bit Watson in early February, adding to a string of challenges for the Nuggets this season. Adelman described the impact of these injuries as “deflating,” especially as the team strives to build momentum.
Before his injury, Watson was having a standout season. He set career highs in points (32) and rebounds (12) against New Orleans in November, marking his first double-double. His performance continued to shine in January with three more 30-point games, stepping up as Jamal Murray’s key support amid the team’s injury woes.
Watson’s role became even more vital with Christian Braun and Aaron Gordon also facing health issues. Braun’s ankle problems have limited him to 32 games, while Gordon has played just 27 due to his own hamstring troubles.
In a contract year, Watson has been making his case, playing 49 games and averaging 14.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2 assists per game, shooting an impressive 50% from the field and 42% from beyond the arc. While Adelman initially set a hopeful timeline for both Gordon and Watson, only Gordon has returned, with Watson’s recovery taking longer than expected.
Once Watson is cleared, his return will stir discussions about Denver’s rotation. Cameron Johnson has recently found his rhythm, while Braun is still working to regain his form from last season. This raises the question of whether Watson will reclaim his starting spot or transition to a bench role.
For now, the Nuggets are in a holding pattern, eagerly anticipating Watson’s return. With 14 games left in the regular season, getting Watson back for even 10 games could provide a crucial boost as they gear up for the playoffs.
